One of the major points he makes which is very interesting is that the archive (and let’s think about that as ‘history’) is only actually understandable in the future.

Grimly ironic precursors to later events
In 1888 this "gateway to Asia" was discussed vis-à-vis Russian attempts to secure that country's southern borders, and London outlined scenarios whereby the Ottomans might be made to give up the waterway to Russian influence after the arrival of a hostile fleet. 9 England solicited the opinion of German engineers on where to place gun batteries astride the Bosphorus in order to avoid this, information which was then circulated between different branches of the British empire in dispatches. 10 One of these engineers, Von der Goltz Pasha, outlined how existing emplacements were basically death traps, and would easily be taken by any real Russian aggression in the region.

I feel like digital humanities was this great 15 year moment of techno-optimism that created solid resources and showed how old media connected to new media. Whereas AI is going to introduce a period of techno-cannibalism designed to devour digital humanities labor and anyone else in its proximity.

students absolutely need to spend time reading difficult texts (assuming anybody taught them to read in K-12, and not just three-cueing). writing, absolutely, is thinking. i believe in all of that as much as i also believe technological tools can let us do new cool stuff on top of that foundation.

One thing I’m seeing in the amnesia of a lot of GenAI-era tech criticism: they’ve abandoned the smart cities / digital geographies discourse’s gestures twd inclusive citation from a decade ago. We’re back to all-guy reference lists — including books by guys who didn’t bother citing anyone at all.
