For anyone who hasn't seen it, here's the Pebble Mill clip of Dahl in his filthy shed of solitude. Presumably intended as a charming portrait of an eccentric artist at work, it makes him look like Albert and Harold Steptoe fused into one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQkz...

I'm listening to a (otherwise interesting) podcast about the life of rabid antisemite Roald Dahl in which he's depicted as some sort of irresistible sex magnet. Even in his youthful prime he looked like a shoehorn. And I know it's not nice to mock people's looks, but that never stopped Dahl.

Just finished reading James Goss' excellent new novelisation of The Ribos Operation (for a DWM review of BBC Books' The Key to Time omnibus). And now I can watch it in all its dog-mauled upper-lip glory on iPlayer. I'm eternally grateful to RTD and co for making Classic Who so readily available.

COMING SOON Part two of our episode on separating the art from the artist, we’re calling it: ‘The elephant in the room’ As if we didn’t name a whole load of awful people in the first episode… we did! And we name even more in this one.

RIP Esther Rantzen. I loved That's Life! as a kid, even though its very existence signified that the weekend was officially over and I had double P.E. horror in the morning. But somehow that strange whiplash amalgam of deadly serious reports and Great British Public whimsy functioned as a balm

Just remembered Noel Edmonds on Swap Shop linking from the video for Tight Fit's version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight with "I don't know how the lion can get any sleep with all that racket going on", and seven-year-old me thinking that was one of the funniest things anyone had ever said.

Stallone's excellent memoir about his early struggles and the making of Rocky contains a HUGE revelation. That's not him as an extra in Altman's M*A*S*H. He was a cinema usher in 1970 and cites M*A*S*H as a film he studied repeatedly, but doesn't mention being in it. Another myth shattered.

You know how I keep going on about how the Bee Gees were actually *fucking weird*? Prime example. "Sweet Song of Summer" sounds absolutely nothing like the title, but exactly like what you'd expect from a 1982 John Carpenter remake of The Wicker Man, if you can imagine such a thing.

The Return of Bruno by Bruce Willis might not be the *best* album Motown ever released, but it was one of my gateway drugs into '60s soul music. The accompanying spoof documentary was also one of my first introductions to that particular genre. So, thanks Bruce.

I'd just like to say that the cover to the new Micky Dolenz EP is making me smile tonight. It's so *right*.
Cover to the new Micky Dolenz EP, "Timeless". A very, very 60s design - the word "stereo" on the top left corner of the cover, picked out in lower case. Next to it, the promise "A NEW DIMENSION IN SOUND".
