One thing about people citing slower car travel times on Bloor West following the bike lane install is, well, that was kind of the point. Drivers were **averaging** nearly 20 km/h over the current speed limit at spots. Road revamp has brought speeds closer to limit. www.toronto.ca/wp-content/u...
Two bar charts comparing average and 95th percentile vehicle speeds in km/h across five Toronto locations over three time periods (2021/23, 2024, 2025/26), with a posted speed limit of 40 km/h indicated by a dotted line.

I’m 1/4 through Chapter 1 of @zephoria.bsky.social’s new ethnography of the US census & I am full-on IN TEARS in my lounge room at 10pm. I’ve aspired to be a “bureaucrat for the revolution” for 25 years & this book is giving my battered old heart words for everything I’ve been striving for
Photo of a page displayed on a Kobo e-reader, saying:

… and yet civil servants dedicate their lives to the pursuit of creating more perfect data. The census cannot ever be truly apolitical given that it is at the heart of the politics of the United States, and yet civil servants never stop pursuing the ideals of nonpartisanship. The persistent tension between ideals and pragmatics is what makes the administrative state so critical to a healthy democracy.
Civil servants serve the public through their dedication and persistence, despite the challenges of the work. And despite having bosses who want to weaponize them.
I see the Census Bureau's civil servants as heroes-not
because I believe in bureaucracy, but because these workers are committed to the ideal version of the American project. [THIS BIT IS HIGHLIGHTED] Public servants toil in the shadows, making consequential choices with little recognition, only to be attacked for trying to make the system work for the people. Too often, they're blamed for the Kafkaesque nightmare in which they operate, even as politicians and advocates quietly configure what they are able to do. [END HIGHLIGHT]
This book is, in many ways, a love letter to those civil servants and the kind of institution that enables them to rise to the occasion. If we want to escape our death spiral of polarization, we must stop treating bureaucrats as…

Fun fact: Tesla went with a giant touchscreen instead of knobs for the Model 3 purely to save time and money. Knobs would have required spinning up a whole supply chain. The company spun it as a luxury feature and much of the industry followed suit. But it was always an inferior substitute.

It's time for the public to learn that public services cannot run on the concept of doing more with less. When there are large cuts to services that rely on public monies, people should feel the results. Libraries, universities, etc. need to stop trying to lessen the visibility of funding cuts.

WAVE (1994) Acrylic on Canvas - 48” x 48” Of all the paintings hanging in my home, this one probably elicits the most comments. #art
An exponential curve expressed as a massive wave of green-blue water that climbs to vertical against a sky of puffy lavender clouds. Light breaks through the cloud cover just over the horizon casting a flat glare across rippling water before the wave climbs. Fin-like ridges emerge running up the wall give the water turbulence and dimension.

Christin's wrong about almost everything, but right about this: This committee hearing matters & real Texas parents need to let lawmakers know the effects of SB12 & SB13. @txfreedomread.bsky.social will be there with a TON of data about the damage these laws have done. Bring your stories!
Tweet from book burner Texas Republican official Christin Bentley that reads:

“The Texas Senate Committee on Education will convene on Wednesday, October 7, at 8:00 a.m. to address several interim charges, including monitoring the implementation of legislation passed last session. The hearing specifically includes SB 571, SB 12, and SB 13, all of which contain important protections for Texas children and parental rights.

I expect there will be significant testimony regarding SB 13, which strengthened Texas' mandatory school library standards, established local school library advisory councils, and expanded parental oversight of school library materials.

SB 13 was an important step forward in our efforts to stop the sexualization of children and keep inappropriate materials out of school libraries. But passing legislation is only part of the work. Implementation and enforcement matter.”Second part of a tweet from book burning GOP official that reads:

“We have already seen inconsistencies in implementation across the state, including districts that appear unwilling to fully comply with the law.

If you have been involved in auditing school libraries, filing local book challenges, serving on a library advisory council, or documenting problems with your district's implementation of SB 13, I strongly encourage you to participate in this hearing and share what you have seen.

You can testify in person or provide written testimony to members of the Senate Education Committee. Public testimony at the hearing will be limited to two minutes per person, and those submitting written testimony at the hearing are instructed to bring 10 copies with their name on each copy.

This is an important opportunity for legislators to hear directly from parents and community members about what is actually happening in Texas school libraries and where implementation of SB 13 may need to be strengthened.

Control of ship lost/hijack – hostage situation
In the event of a ship hijacking and holding the crew
the following principles serve as guidelines:
DO:
Ÿ Remain calm: maintain self-control.
Ÿ Be respectful: be humble,
respectful to captors and do not get
involved or affected by prejudice-
based treatment.
Ÿ Look out for colleagues: ensure the
well-being of colleagues.
Ÿ Stay together: stay together as a
team where possible.
Ÿ Accept leadership: accept the
new leadership and maintain the
hierarchy of rank.
Ÿ Communication: try to establish normal
communication with the captors.
Ÿ Hygiene: maintain personal hygiene.
Ÿ Conserve resources: save water
and essentials.
Ÿ Stay positive: many people are
working to release you.
Ÿ Be patient: maintain routines,
including spiritual needs.
Ÿ Regular breathing: keep your
breathing regular to help stay calm.
Ÿ Mental activity: meditate or keep
mentally active.
Ÿ Respect religion: respect your
religion, colleagues’, and captors’.
DON’T:
Ÿ Offer resistance.
Ÿ Argue with captors or colleagues.
Ÿ Take photographs.
Ÿ Hide valuables.
Ÿ React emotionally.
Ÿ Take drugs or alcohol.
Ÿ Bargain for personal privileges.
Actions on boarding by activists
Activists have a history of conducting well planned
and executed boardings on vessels and offshore
platforms. Such boardings are generally peaceful and
aimed at gaining media attention – often by attaching
banners and filming the event. These actions are
commonly supported by a mothership, which may
also record the activity and deploy UAVs (drones).
It is essential that crews are properly briefed,
trained, and regularly practise their response
procedures as such boarding incidents have
potential to produce numerous safety incidents.
On platforms, protestors typically move to a high
point in the structure to make removal more difficult.
