My death penalty position is that the state should not be in the business of deliberately killing its citizens and the fact that it’s also incapable of doing it humanely is just another level of the madness.

There are some absolute cunts out there but normally their cuntish instincts are kept in check by social disapproval. One of the things that the Balaclava Brigade (aided by politicians and the BBC’s ‘legitimate concerns’ narrative) have been able to do is mobilize and legitimize that cuntishness.

it's just not the case that LLMs can destroy humanity. An LLM cannot (technical sense) do shit. The thing which can damage important systems would be "an executable program, which calls an LLM to determine its behaviour". So, don't write one of those unless you are confident you can control it.

"but but Danny, the LLMs are so complicated and cool now that it's *impossible* for me to write a program like that and be confident I can control or predict its behaviour". Well you're not allowed to do the thing then!!! This is how we regulate poison and explosives. Leave it to someone who can

The "stop the boats" movement is being driven by the type of English suburban racist who thinks that one black family living in their street is one too many. Yes, it really is as simple as that, and it has been for decades. There is no intellectual depth to this stuff. It is pure, distilled hate.

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

Nobody knows what the sentence for any particular criminal offence is, so changing sentences (e.g. by making them "tougher") has vanishingly little chance of affecting anyone's behaviour.

most of these recent events involved the companies not adequately isolating their AUTOMATED HACKING SOFTWARE from the internet, not monitoring it in real time, and not understanding their own software worked And I still don't think you can rule out some of these being intentional marketing stunts
"These behaviors have now crossed the line from unsettling to dangerous. During routine testing, frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and the Chinese firm Moonshot AI have all broken out of internal IT systems and accessed the open web. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta each reported that their models then hacked into other companies. Humans didn’t notice until after the fact. In some cases, the escaped bots tried to launch social-engineering campaigns to achieve their objectives—for instance by sending spear-phishing emails, which contain malware, to real people and creating fake online identities to pressure the maintainer of a codebase to approve malicious edits."

Long horizontal Illustration painted by Eleonor Piteira for a Special Edition of The Odyssey by Homer, it's all painted in the style of ancient Greek pottery with a dark background and orange figures with their heads all in profile, and it shows a scene of the party in Ithaka, with Penelope looking sad while everyone around her is having fun, dancing, eating, drinking, flirting, fighting.

If early release can be altered so as to exempt homicide offences, it should be. Prisoners who have caused the gravest harm should be among the last to benefit from the overcrowding crisis. But carving out exceptions for individual prisoners in response to media campaigns is weak and unprincipled.

I have seen repeated many times, including in scholarly literature, the idea that a) the Nagasaki attack was ordered strategically because the Japanese government had not responded to Hiroshima, and b) that Truman "ordered" the dropping of a second atomic bomb. Neither of these are true.
