I have heard some bonkerooney from the Tories in recent years, but this is off the charts. As a sensible policy, it is up there with making it a legal requirement for people called Jacob to wear trousers while taking a shower. That level of madness. Let’s break it down.

It's not often that I get surprised by a book in a way that makes me go "oooh" and flip back through the whole book to see how it fell together rather than think the book is not playing fair, but "The Cut Throat" trial by @barristersecret.bsky.social did just that. Amazing situations reversals

Elements of this, such as fixing and guaranteeing a trial date in rape cases are welcome and overdue. But as I wrote when the last government floated this idea, I am yet to understand what “specialist courtrooms” will actually amount to. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

Removing basic amenities such as laundry rooms and cramming more prisoners in the same square footage doesn’t sound like it will help with the crisis in prison conditions. Which is fine if all you want from prison is temporary warehousing of people. Less so if you want to stop people reoffending.

If early release can be altered so as to exempt homicide offences, it should be. Prisoners who have caused the gravest harm should be among the last to benefit from the overcrowding crisis. But carving out exceptions for individual prisoners in response to media campaigns is weak and unprincipled.
