Reckon I could die laughing if 'electoral reform' amounted to the Supplementary Vote. Just the most egregious 'British approach to constitutional reform' possible. Little gained, new problems, actual reform delayed.

Cutting climate change spending for defence is a false economy. The less we spend on gas and oil, the safer we are. The economy is more resilient, energy pricers are lower and less volatile, and less cash goes into Putin's pocket.

Why is the European discussion about a possible Russian attack so “oh no, what if” and so little “if you attack we’ll hit you back hard, you know we can.” Russia has its hands full in Ukraine. They should be, and almost certainly are, afraid of the war expanding. Fret less. Prep and deter more.

Whenever the next Spanish general election is called - and it's looking like sooner rather than later now - it will be the most consequential for over 40 years. The return of the far-right to power will blow up the 1978 constitutional settlement. It could also see Pedro Sánchez end up in prison.

New blog from me: devolving the Warm Homes Plan is good, but not the Boiler Upgrade Scheme! Energy Sec Miatta Fahnbulleh has announced that the £15bn Warm Homes Plan will be devolved. We think this is good - mayors are well placed to upgrade homes. BUT! www.nesta.org.uk/blog/devolvi...

Devolving the Warm Homes Plan to local government makes sense - but the Boiler Upgrade Scheme should stay

What's happening in Oleshky looks like the Holodomor on a smaller scale. If you scale it up to all of Ukraine, this is going to be something like 3-4 million dead, similar to the 1930s. More weapons for Ukraine with fewer restraints, and more suppression of Putinist parties and organizations.

You either bow down to the assumption that voters’ preferences are fixed or at least exogenous. Or you decide that they’re malleable and endogenous - and so prepare to make a political argument. Better, perhaps, to risk dying on your feet than live on your knees.

The BBC switching its local resources from radio to the website has been disastrous for the business model of local newspapers, but you have to balance that against how good it has been for 'the BBC's opponents' and 'random companies who now get a PR hit on the biggest news website in the UK'.

Unemployment among young people is a big issue! Morally as well as economically. But you solve that by tackling mental health and looking at why the jobs aren't there for this cohort, not by treating adults like overgrown kids and going "yeah, you're your parents responsibility, kthxbai"

This isn't because of either the triple lock, or the housing crisis, or the GFC, or student loans, or social care. It's a combination. Govt mistakes, then fudging over decades resulting in cumulative failures. Again, nothing is irreversible here but no-one in Westminster is being 100% honest.

I feel like part of the inability from leading politicians to have any honest conversations around pensions, is because they have to face up to the fact that future generations have less assets, have much worse pvt pensions, and will ultimately have to work longer than previous generations.

This one raises a fascinating philosophical question: if you list your flat for £200k more than it is worth, have you really listed it, or are you just posting pictures of your home's interior online?
Georgia Dean and her husband recently took their property off the market.

He bought the two-bedroom flat in Haggerston, east London, for £470,000 in 2014. But the mortgage rate was due to rise from 1.6 per cent to 4.8 per cent: renting the flat out no longer made financial sense.

They listed it in June for £650,000, a below-inflation increase. An estate agent told them “no one would sniff around if the price stayed above £600,000”, said Dean, who works in product at a tech start-up.

In the two months before the couple pulled the listing, it attracted only two viewings.

That's not to say there aren't economic benefits of industrialisation, I think there are, but they won't look the same as they did in the past and it still requires a lot of demand which just doesn't much exist for a mid-sized open economy in Northern Europe
