Please remember that for every VE Schwab and Stephen King, there are a lot of banned Black, queer, and POC writers you've never heard of, to whom it is maybe not a badge of honor but a denial of their voice. Being banned is not a marketing opportunity, unless one is already rich.

Fielding questions re: this article w/bizarre factual errors. First, there's no "Montecito County" in CA. Second, 2 fires are actually in *Monterey,* & 3rd in *Mendocino*. Third, 60k ac have *not* burned in either fictional Montecito nor real Mendocino.🤨

one of my favorite Chinese religious beliefs is that there's a prominent deity called the Horse King, who is the protector of equines, especially for draft labor. Sometimes around the late Ming, a conviction arises that the Horse King is *Muslim* - and therefore you sacrifice lamb, not pork, to him.

Well, this ended up more of an experiment with media than anything else, but to be fair, that was what I intended when I started. I don't know how I feel about the finished result as a whole, but I like a lot of the textures, and I learned a little more about what works for me and what doesn't.

He also included a long diatribe about how, if there was a foolish advisor misleading the government, who didn't believe the reports of a dutiful official like him and those of the loyal villagers, well, he'd be happy to show him or anyone else around in person during flood season.

The Tyrolese government, however, ignored all of that, so the regional offical wrote a new, lenghty and aggresively polite report: The estemmed councillors were far too wise to want to build roads in a floodplain, so surely some info had gone lost on the way or some lowly official had messed up!

I especially like formulaic niceties that were weaponized for passive-aggression. E. g. in the 16th cent. the Tyrolese government wanted to expand transportation in a region, despite fervent pleas by locals to stop. A regional official also wrote several reports backing up the villagers claims./

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.
