Here to tell you that the chemistry and tension in this scene still hits for 2026 teenagers, as evidenced by the very vocal reactions of my students today

It was also basically Pelosi’s point when she said that line about needing a healthy Republican Party, and not a party of destructive maniacs who are incapable of doing anything good

In a lot of his movies, John Wayne isn’t really the protagonist, he’s a conundrum that the protagonist has to deal with. There’s the hero, the threat they need to defeat, and in between the two is this rigid force of nature John Wayne. The movies ask if he does more harm than good.

Red River is interesting. I don’t really know if it’s true but to me it really really looks like it was leading to a final act where John Wayne’s character was revealed to be a truly heartless maniac, but they chickened out and swapped out the final 20 minutes with an upbeat ending where they hug.

This was the content of an email sent from someone I knew to a group of our mutual friends on 9/11, before the sender knew if my family and I had been killed, and it still stings.

Every time something like this happens, before we know anything about the motive, people come out of the woodwork to say that they don’t approve of these attacks, they just have created a headcanon where the attacker is a tragic and sympathetic figure who has the same goals as them

This isn't even the worst urban slaughter in an ongoing major conflict--the Sudanese RSF murdered more than 100,000 and possibly as many as 200,000 human beings in and around the city of El Fasher over a few weeks in Oct-Nov 2025.

In what world do you think this is acceptable behavior? Scouring bluesky for months-old replies so you, with tenure, could put a postdoc on blast in the name of...what? Because I think AI's lack consciousness for different reasons than yours? Or are you just trawling for academics who look like me?

I get yelled at here whenever I describe what the political effect of Biden's very overt pressure on Bibi was and what worked and what didn't, because I'm essentially telling Americans that foreign media and societies matter and are useful to learn about, and Americans are incurious so they lash.

even if you take 100% at face value that no one's safeword is being disregarded and that everyone going there knows exactly what is going to happen (a big if), that is clearly a "yes, I am more likely to view you as qualified and hire you if you have sex with me" from an attendee's own mouth.

Sorry not sorry, if you think crashing a plane and killing a bunch of people would have fought "genocide" because the victims would be Israeli, it seems to me like you're the one who's desensitized to mass killing and places no value on human life.

Existence is genocide. Genocide comes from the Jews' craving attachment to not being exterminated. Genocide can be ended. The way to end genocide is the Eightfold Hitlerite Path.

Like I'm sorry, you don't get to go on a rampage through a neighboring state's border communities publicly massacring civilians to the exclusion of combatants and then run back home - with hostages in tow - and yell "BASE!" as if nothing happened.

Like I feel like pointing out that even Trump's attempted assassins didn't really have coherent politics. People who decide one day to go out and do mass murder, or high profile assassinations, generally aren't, like, normal. It's weird that "normies" try to project noble motives onto their actions.

Anyway people should know that the vast majority of mass murders are caused by the killer having weird grievances and grandiose ideas of their fame and influence after their death, not like, actual attempts to enact real justice. People like, know that, right?

I hate how every crime or accusation has become a litmus test for "where you stand on the cultural issues of the day" to which the facts/evidence are a secondary (and often inconvenient) consideration at best. We've been trending this way for a long time and podcast culture has only made it worse.

it's not just that violence against civilians is understood as instrumental, but that it is the terminal objective. the gulag or the wall is seen as the site of the atrocities they will be permitted to commit, justified by the atrocities they share clips of and enjoy together.

video of actual Israeli atrocities against Palestinians occupies the same central position in these networks as actual child pornography does in QAnon in that it is both the primary target of condemnation and the primary source of the sexual excitement which drives the movement

one way to put this is "a person who is screaming about how they would delight in seeing me die and who is using the fact that they were trespassed out of a Panera Bread for screaming at senior citizens to kill themselves as a signal of their credibility" is not a person whose feelings i care about

The way this works in the US is the left defers entirely to the epistemic authority of Palestinians, regardless of how intolerant or illiberal their views, while granting epistemic authority to Jews only insofar as they can be called upon to explain why the objections of other Jews can be dismissed

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.
