“Now it’s relaunching ‘CNA en Español’…” -yeah!! “…using AI translation.” -dammit! 😡 AI translation may be fine for things like captions for small YouTube videos, but for a national news organization’s reach for the Spanish-speaking world, this is disappointing to say the least.

🍉Treepeva is one month old! The baby tapir was born Aug 17 — at 8.6kg, to papa Mo-Shu and mama Putri — from a conservation program between Singapore and Taipei Zoo. Treepeva is a nod to "chhùi-pinn-bah", meaning "the flesh beside the mouth" in Taiwanese. The calf's sibling is Treeda, or "thirsty."

Bi-Khim Hsiao at Ventotene: We have a shared interest in ensuring that differences are resolved peacefully. We have a shared interest in ensuring that democratic wishes are respected, and that large countries do not determine the future of smaller countries. No island is too small to have a voice.
Remarks at the Second European Conference of Ventotene for Freedom and Democracy

H.E. Bi-Khim Hsiao
Vice President, ROC (Taiwan)
September 11, 2026

Thank you, Mr. Talia, Mr. Vernetti, and of course the Honorable Madam Vice President of the European Parliament, Madame Picierno. I want to extend first my gratitude to Madame Picierno for inviting me here to this conversation, for including Taiwan in this important discussion on the
future of freedom and democracy.

It’s especially meaningful for us to be here on the island of Ventotene.

I understand that Ventotene has a very extraordinary history, where during the difficult and dark days of Europe, Altiero Spinelli and others who were fighting totalitarianism were incarcerated here. But through this experience
came the Ventotene Manifesto, which was a conversation about integration and cooperation for peace and the future of Europe.

But of course, today we are under very different circumstances. For the Indo-Pacific region and for Taiwan, we also went through a very challenging period of democratization. This year, we are commemorating 30 years since the end of our first presidential election, which followed the
end of 37 years of martial law and a long period of colonialism. Like the people and freedom fighters here at Ventotene, many freedom fighters in Taiwan also fought for freedom and democracy under very difficult circumstances. And that is why today in Taiwan we enjoy free elections,
the freedom of speech, the opportunity for open discussion and debate, aswe have here tonight in Ventotene.

But I think we have to deal with some new realities, and that is the original vision for an integrated and peaceful Europe is now facing new circumstances. The Russian invasion of Ukraine challenges our assumptions for peace. And also economic relationships create not only
opportunities, but there are some new vulnerabilities as well.

In Taiwan, our democracy is also facing significant military and gray zone tactics. I hope that is a celebration for freedom (Fireworks in the background) It’s Friday night, and I think it’s a time for us to extend greater appreciation for freedom because so many people fought so hard for it, and we can never take freedom for granted.

But as in Taiwan, we are facing increasing military and gray zone pressures on our survival, on our democracy. We also have a response to that, to
defend it, and that is why in Taiwan we are working to strengthen our economy, but also to strengthen our defense capabilities.

In addition, we are building whole-of-society resilience, whether it is in resilient communications, resilient responses to crisis situations, and also more resilient critical infrastructure, energy, a more resilient economy, all of these are pressing challenges, which brings Taiwan and Europe to a shared situation, and that is, we are not only dealing with new challenges.

We also have many shared interests.

We have a shared interest in ensuring that differences are resolved peacefully. We have a shared interest in ensuring that democratic wishes are respected, and that large countries do not determine the future ofsmaller countries through threats and coercion.

Whether it is Ventotene or Taiwan, no island is too small to have a voice, and no island or no society is too small to deserve respect.

And that is why it is meaningful for Taiwan to be part of this conversation, because as we look ahead, Taiwan and Europe are not only working
together to defend values that are important for us, but Taiwan is not only a geopolitical headline.

Taiwan is made up of people just like the people here in Italy: resourceful, generous, warm human beings who also strive for human dignity and
freedom.

So again, thank you for this invitation to be here, and I must say that it took my delegation and I 27 hours to get here, from departing my home in Taipei to arriving here through air, land, and sea, and actually pretty stormy weather yesterday, but despite that, it is so meaningful for us to be here,
and it’s an important time to be included in these conversations.

So thank you again for making this happen, and thanks to all of you for standing in [with] Taiwan.

The CCP is banking on an "LLM for global crisis response" — "an experimental pipeline in which foreign-media coverage and social-media reactions are simulated, and changes in user sentiment and the spread of topics are predicted." The output, or "silicon sampling," optimizes China's global strategy.

Calling Taiwan "a leading partner in terms of situational awareness," the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield identifies the island nation's whole-of-society approach and early-warning capacities as key findings for enhancing the resilience and effectiveness of the European Democracy.
CY. whereas preparedness depends on seamless cooperation between the EU institutions,
agencies, Member States and like-minded international partners, supported by joint
exercises and training, shared situational awareness platforms and rapid information
exchange; whereas Taiwan, a leading partner in terms of situational awareness, has been
organising extensive civil defence and resilience exercises aiming to combat China’s
increasing grey-zone warfare tactics, complementing its military drills; whereas
Taiwan’s whole-of-society approach and best practice can contribute to developing the
concept of preparedness in the EU, and strengthening shared situational awareness,
early-warning capacities and the overall effectiveness of the European Democracy

#TaiwanArchives: 1945 Two dictators, Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong, last met in Chongqing for post-war negotiations following their joint victory against Japan. The Double Tenth Agreement acknowledged the KMT as the legitimate government of China, and the CCP as a legitimate opposition party.
Held in Chongqing, China, from 29 August to 10 October 1945, the negotiations were highlighted by a meeting between CCP Chairman Mao Zedong and KMT Chairman Chiang Kai-shek, marking the first time the two leaders had met in 20 years. It would also be their final meeting.

The global hysteria against Taiwan boxer Lin Yu-ting was started by Russian boxing kingpin Umar Kremlev, head of the International Boxing Association (IBA), an agency disavowed in 2023 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over corruption and ethical issues. He offered no proof then and now.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) held a press conference on Aug 5, 2024 that has since been described as “farcical,” “shambolic,” and “a car crash” fronted by “utter clowns, possibly criminals… and dingbats.” Instead of clarifying its claims regarding the so-called illegitimacy of Taiwan’s Lin and Algeria’s Imane Khelif, the IBA put forth even more contradictory statements and ignored straight-forward questions in a bumbling event that not only started 57 minutes late but was persistently plagued by low-grade technical issues like mic mishaps and muted conference calls. Several journalists walked out midway after realizing the IBA wasn’t planning to actually answer any honest queries.

IBA President Umar Kremlev appeared as a discombobulated head hovering over his three henchmen via glitchy video link. Relying on an interpreter, Putin's pal spoke in Russian and retorted that it was up to the two women athletes to prove that they were actual women. It was a classic case of “guilty until proven innocent.”

🇪🇺🇹🇼🇮🇹 Taiwanese Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim is in Italy for a democracy forum. Pina Picierno, vice president of the European Parliament, said: "No one can determine who can be hosted on European soil [...], and what presences must be hidden." "Freedom of debate is not negotiable with autocracies."
Pina Picierno, vice president of the European Parliament, said Hsiao’s planned participation “was kept secret until her arrival to protect her participation” in the conference.

“No one can determine who can be hosted on European soil, what voices can be heard, and what presences must be hidden,” Picierno said in a Facebook post. “It is a simple and very clear message: intimidation cannot decide who participates in our democratic debate.”

“Freedom of debate is not negotiable with autocracies. And Ventotene, more than ever today, must continue to be the place where freedom and democracy are defended without fear,” she added.
