One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

“Spaghetti Night.” Pen and copic gray marker on paper.

Our man is in the kitchen making spaghetti for his guests, who have become increasingly rowdy as they wait for dinner. More on them in a moment. He speaks into his landline phone with his oven mitts on, “Everybody’s pretty riled up for spaghetti night.” He is correct because sure enough we see his riled up dinner guests in the background. Two men play wrestle as a woman raises her hand to spank one of the wrestler's cheeks. She’s got great leverage on the windup so those cheeks are about to be pummeled, reader. Another man finds himself being carried by a woman with a crew-cut. Her strength is on display here because despite the man’s weight she’s able to effortlessly run around the living room with him slung over her shoulder like a ragdoll. Behind them we see another spaghetti night guest pumping his fists and shouting to the ceiling. Perhaps howling.

Artist’s note: One of my favorite drawings. Love seeing the whole group having a great time together.

I am still working hard on learning/improving with watercolors. I like how this one turned out; the flowers got a little messier than I'd have liked, but I still learned a lot. 👍 And I have a good scan of the sketch that I can print on watercolor paper if I ever want to take another crack at it.
A watercolor painting of two men tenderly embracing; one has his head resting on the other's chest, and the other holds him gently. The colors are soft and muted. There are chrysanthemum flowers in the foreground as a decorative element, with strong red outlines to contrast with the softer shading on the figures. The pencil sketch for the previous watercolor painting of two men tenderly embracing with decorative chrysanthemum flowers in the foreground.

Oh hi. It's my birthday 🙂 I have to say that diving into acrylic painting and book illustration over these last few years has been incredibly rewarding, and I enjoy learning more, painting more, and getting older really is quite great!
Cover illustration for "Fusion Fragment" showing a portrait of a woman facing upwards, as a mirror shatters around her. The mirror shards all show eyes of other women trapped within them. Two mask shards are also falling around her face, inspired by Japanese kabuki masks, representing her mixed heritage. Acrylic painting showing Sauron's defeat by Lúthien and Huan at Tol-in-GaurhothBook interior illustration for "Fangs for Nothing", showing the MC Winnie in a castle hallway. The scene takes inspiration from Gothic horror and Gothic romance movies, from the nightgown design to the candelabra.
A black cat hides behind Winnie's leg, a vampire hides in a dark doorway, and the red candlelight reflects of a suit of armor and several empty painting frames. Acrylic character illustration for a fantasy book commission. The two characters are shown in a sparse, partially destroyed ice palace hall. Both characters have unnaturally pale skin and are clad in black.

The birth flowers of September are Aster (Asteracae) and Morning Glory (Ipomoea), symbolising wisdom and undying love. They also happen to be my birth flowers! I turned 30 earlier this month :)
An art-nouveau style illustration of a fair-skinned woman with blue-black wavy hair, clad in robes of shimmering blue. She is surrounded by oversized morning glories and asters, both blue in colour. She is surrounded by a flowing, vine-like framework, and the background is a mix of deep blue clouds and a starscape.

A tiny harvest mouse leaning against the wind, perches on a oppy seed head. A small original artwork, an ideal gift for a nature lover... folksy.com/find/item/86... #HarvestMouse #Mouse #OriginalArt #Drawing #Artwork #GiftIdeas #ShopIndy #SupportSmallBusiness #SciArt #NatureArt #WildlifeArt #bsnm
A postcard size drawing of a little harvest mouse on a poppy seed head with poppy seed heads blowing in the wind and a background in warm tones of red, orange and yellow.
The tiny harvest mouse lives in long tussocky grassland, reedbeds, hedgerows, farmland and around woodland edges. It is mainly vegetarian, eating seeds and fruits, but will also eat invertebrates.
An original art work, please note that the frame is not included.
Colour pencil on white acid free artist watercolour paper (postcard size).
Approximately 4 by 6 inches (10.16 x 15.24 cm) will fit into a standard 4 by 6 inch photo frame.
The drawing will be in a clear envelope so you can view it before framing.

Ballpoint pen, colored pencil, and copic gray marker on paper. A man sits at the table with a painting easel, painting supplies, and a small bowl of fruit. As he paints on the canvas he speaks to someone on his landline phone, “Had a dream that a witch told me to start painting - - yeah, doin’ a little fruit bowl thing.” Artist’s note: I probably should’ve painted the colors in this one rather than used colored pencil. Whatever the witch represents in his psyche he is wise to listen to her.

Well, this ended up more of an experiment with media than anything else, but to be fair, that was what I intended when I started. I don't know how I feel about the finished result as a whole, but I like a lot of the textures, and I learned a little more about what works for me and what doesn't.
A watercolor and ink painting of a barn owl with starry patterning on its neck and down the center of its face. The owl sits nestled in a dead tree, looking directly at the viewer. Five other larger star designs are positioned around the owl and its tree.

"All of us have to learn how to invent our lives, make them up, imagine them. We need to be taught these skills; we need guides to show us how. Without them, our lives get made up for us by other people." Thinking about these words from Le Guin today in honor of those who imagined new ways for us. ♥️
Home, imagined, comes to be. It is real, realer than any other place, but you can’t get to it unless your people show you how to imagine it—whoever your people are. They may not be your relatives. They may never have spoken your language. They may have been dead for a thousand years. They may be nothing but words printed on paper, ghosts of voices, shadows of minds.

But they can guide you home. They are your human community.

All of us have to learn how to invent our lives, make them up, imagine them. We need to be taught these skills; we need guides to show us how. Without them, our lives get made up for us by other people.

Human beings have always joined in groups to imagine how best to live and help one another carry out the plan. The essential function of human community is to arrive at some agreement on what we need, what life ought to be, what we want our children to learn, and then to collaborate in learning and teaching so that we and they can go on the way we think is the right way [....]

In our time of huge populations exposed continuously to reproduced voices, images, and words used for commercial and political profit, there are too many people who want to and can invent us, own us, shape and control us through seductive and powerful media. It’s a lot to ask of a child to find a way through all that alone. Nobody can do anything very much, really, alone.

What a child needs, what we all need, is to find some other people who have imagined life along lines that make sense to us and allow some freedom, and listen to them. Not hear passively, but listen.

the lessons we need to take are clear. Dolly said "find out who you are and do it on purpose", and Tim Curry's line is "don't dream it, be it" they would both be disappointed if we wrote that off as corny. so what? it's necessary. we have everything to lose if we are dishonest to ourselves.
