We're having a lovely start to the month reminiscing on our Playwrights Gathering at the Fringe in August. It was a packed night celebrating not only Uma Nada-Rajah's Hector MacMillan Award win, but also the launch of the new Scottish Queer Play Anthology with some of the wonderful featured writers.

Another appeal, which he's v unlikely to win, but the whole point is the generation of these headlines and the normalisation of the claim that homophobia is protected under the Equality Act. It is not, but these people have endless cash to spend to try to find a court that will set such a precedent.

Name a film with a female director: Blue Black Permanent is a haunting film, suffused with grief, that moves between blue-hued cityscapes of Edinburgh and the clearer, whiter blues of Orkney. The story of a photographer, played by Celia Imrie, who is trying to come to terms with her mother's death.

September 27, 1960: the Situationist International "calls in particular upon the cultural authorities of Britain and on all British intellectuals who value liberty to demand the setting free of Alexander Trocchi, who is beyond all doubt England's most intelligent creative artist today."
RESOLUTION OF THE FOURTH CONFERENCE OF THE SITUATIONIST INTERNATIONALCONCERNING THE IMPRISONMENT OF ALEXANDER TROCCHI

The delegates to the fourth conference of the Situationist International, being informed of the arrest in the United States of their friend Alexander Trocchi, and of his charge of use of, and traffic in drugs, declare that the Situationist International retains full confidence in Alexander Trocchi.
The conference

DECLARES that Trocchi could not have, in any case, traffic in drugs; this is clearly a police provocation by which the situationist will not allow themselves to be intimidated;

AFFIRMS that drug taking is without
importance;

APPOINTS Asger Jorn, Jacqueline de Jong and Guy Debord to take immediate action on behalf of Alexander Trocchi and to report upon such action to the Situationist International at the earliest moment;

CALLS in particular upon the cultura. authorities of Britain and on all British intellectuals who value liberty to demand the setting free of Alexander Trocchi, who is beyond all doubt England's most intelligent creative artist today.

John Healey will, according to reports, head into the Budget with a £4bn to £6.5bn chunk of his fiscal headroom having mysteriously gone walkabouts. The cause? A sharp drop in immigration to the UK. Almost as though migrants aren’t all just wandering around devouring taxes for shits and giggles.

Net Migration if Falling - now the Treasury needs to Pay the Bill for it.
After years of promising that fewer migrants would relieve pressure on Britain, Labour is discovering that cutting migration also means cutting workers, taxpayers and economic headroom.

The Times - which has v much joined in the rightwing clamour to reduce immigration - now reporting that Mahmood’s “success” has cost the economy £4- to £7Bn. Would they like to now honestly confirm that fewer people = less spending power for all. There’s a high price to pay for this nasty obsession.
Patrick Maguire
Chief Political Commentator Oliver Wright Policy Editor

Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.
Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).
The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana
Mahmood's
reforms, which have cut net migration to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

George Square
by Jackie Kay

My seventy-seven-year-old father
put his reading glasses on
to help my mother do the buttons
on the back of her dress.
‘What a pair the two of us are!’
my mother said, ‘Me with my sore wrist,
you with your bad eyes, your soft thumbs!’

And off they went, my two parents
to march against the war in Iraq,
him with his plastic hips, her with her arthritis
to congregate at George Square where the banners
waved at each other like old friends, flapping,
where they’d met for so many marches over their years,
for peace on earth, for pity’s sake, for peace, for peace.

What on earth is happening?
  This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

Reading this today about the absolute Spruce Goose that was ratings-war era, ITV soap ‘Albion Market’ Would bloody LOVE to write something about someone being given a set tour and a sit-down dinner with the cast of a show they’ve been tasked with axing! The atmosphere at that dinner!!
Indeed, in June 1986, The Sunday People reported that Granada TV were inviting budding writers to come up with ideas on how to end the doomed soap as 'the regular scriptwriters can't make up their minds how to wrap it up.' The winner would be treated to an all-expenses paid trip to the set and have dinner with its outgoing stars. The final episode aired on August 24, 1986.The cast of Albion Market pose in front of the gates to the eponymous market yard

‘This should be condemned by any thinking human’: film industry rallies behind NAZA directors
Backing comes after Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor were threatened with having their citizenship revoked and accused of treason Film industry heavyweights across the globe have expressed solidarity with Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, the Oscar-winning Israeli directors of documentary NAZA, who have been threatened with having their citizenship revoked by Israel’s culture minister, who accused them of “treason against the state”. NAZA, which was produced by the Guardian, is named for an acronym euphemistically used by Israel’s intelligence service to indicate how many civilians it expects to die in an airstrike on Gaza. It includes interviews with 24 Israeli military or intelligence soldiers and officers who outlined the AI-powered targeting systems used to bombard Gaza, resulting in the mass killing of Palestinian civilians.
