My wee cat that was killed last night, she was so sweet, anything new for the children or house she’d gently get into and look at us as if to say, “oh, this? for me? Oh it’s just lovely thank you, lemmie just scoooch right in the middle” Except for the 4 beds I bought her. Cat repellant apparently

Later in the afternoon we were waking around a fabric shop Dundalk, he was softly singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to himself and an elderly lady was in beaming at him, she then asked me “is it his birthday today?” and I said no, she replied sharply “ahhh why not?!!!” as if I was being cruel to him

Making the objections of Garvaghey Road residents to a parade that 11 people were murdered over, symbolic of the what a United Ireland would be like by those who are rolled out by the state media, over and over - as sensible voices, is some of the worst faith bullshit I’ve seen - & the bar is low

We're in a proper Covid wave here in Ireland at the moment with a significant number of hospitalisations each week. Flu cases are ramping up too. For all the recent news coverage of the flu vaccine shortages, there has been very little public acknowledgement of this Covid wave.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

The problem with John Self’s post is that he reviews fiction for the Irish Times and that can have a real effect on an author’s career. So when he equates the Garvaghy Road protestors against unionist supremacy with anti-immigrant fash, that’s a real problem for authors writing about these topics.

Are you looking to be outraged, are you? www.theguardian.com/uk/1999/jul/...
So last weekend in Portadown, when Orangemen were receiving plaudits for restraint, an American woman observer on Garvaghy Road was pulled over a wall and hospitalised by marchers. Saturday evening mass at St John's was disturbed by bandsmen who decided that the roundabout was a traditional and, of course, endless route. One of their newer traditions was to shout the name of Rosemary Nelson, along with those of Robert Hamill, who was kicked to death two years ago and Gavin Tennyson, one of several young Catholics who have committed suicide on the estate in recent months. A year under siege has taken its toll on people's spirits.

In a political environment that tacitly allows violence to groups of vulnerable people, it is not surprising that at the personal level some feel empowered to engage in their own horrific violent acts.

We need a health minister to put in place stuff to secure an ailing maternity service that delivers 1700-1800 babies annually, from collapse. When Stormont collapses, women delivering on the roadside will be of no concern to those who picked open a 30 year old wound, just to keep feeling important

It’s illustrative that most of the leftist south is concerned with the Irish football team, while the north sits on a precipice. Can chew gum & clap at the same time and all that, indifference is also grand, but just don’t be cosplaying parts of the conflict here when it comes to election time 👍

The thing is they need our misery to keep their vote. Because happiness breeds hope, & the political reps of unionism as far as I can see, promise nothing hopefull, just a dream of a return to a much mourned dominance. 11 people were murdered to get marching this route. 3 children burned to death.
