I love Stephen King. I only have a couple of books left to read. I really like Mike Flanagan. You couldn't pay me to watch another version of Carrie. Particularly stretched over 8 episodes of TV.

Mona Fastvold's The World to Come plays like a really considered short story. It has that economy, and sharpness. It was no surprise to find that is exactly the source (by Jim Shepard). Shepard and Ron Hansen leave that imprint on screen. A film that feels like so much happens just off-screen.

Masterpiece...
Possibly my favourite single shot in all cinema; cinematographer Archie Stout used infra-red film for Ford that accentuated the contrasts offered by this desert vista and the dreamlike clouds gathered above. Stick it in the Louvre...

Fort Apache is a film bristling with humanity. It is built on a complex character, and Henry Fonda a gives a really abrasive turn, particularly when contrasted with John Wayne's easy-going Captain York. The dichotomy is striking because Wayne holds the screen so well, and Fonda is so repellent.

Imagine Tin Cup, The Quiet Man, and The Trip into a digital blender. Except it isn't funny like Tin Cup, painterly and emotional like The Quiet Man, or like The Trip at all. But, you know, it is a two-hour film!

DIGGER: far stranger and richer than expected, a melancholic, delirious masterpiece about art’s futility and our hypocritical need for easy answers. The direction and insane production design blew me away, and Tom Cruise delivers the defining performance of his career. Silencio!

Sadly, still no luck. Here's all memories - it is Irish or Irish-American - everyone thinks the narrator is normal and boring, maybe an accountant - he is a hit-man, employed unwittingly by his brother-in-law -proved his worth by underlining a phone book in a bar, on a single name, and killing them.

Well...I dunno...it's good? The Passion of Tom Cruise. If Dreyer had made Landman. But in the intervening hundred years he'd only seen Roy Andersson films and not understood why they are funny. A cacophonous and aggravating obscenity of a film. It is a satire, but of Aaron Sorkin's entertainment.

The Inugami Family, directed by Kon Ichikawa, is a really satisfying Japanese mystery. Mind you, I hadn't realised till I was two-thirds in that I'd read the novel a few years ago, so you know, maybe I am not the best judge.

LA CÉRÉMONIE (Claude Chabrol, 1995, rewatch). Late Chabrol masterpiece in which two working class women (a provocative, gleefully amoral postmistress, brilliantly played by Isabelle Huppert, and a secretive maid played by Sandrine Bonnaire) take their revenge on the privileged bourgeoisie. #FilmSky

First watch: Gun Crazy (1950, dir. Joseph H. Lewis). Glad to have finally seen this milestone lovers-on-the-run movie. Much more than the more melancholic They Live by Night (1948), this really sets the tone for later iterations of the genre from Bonnie & Clyde to True Romance and beyond
The poster for Gun Crazy, mostly consisting of an illustration of a gun-toting Peggy Cummins (as heroine Laurie) agains a red background. The tagline screams "Thrill Crazy", "Kill Crazy", which just about sums it up

A deliberate, obvious, and direct version Charlie Chaplin's Tramp and Jacques Tati's Hulot, but in the hands of Jerry Lewis, infront and behind the camera. To be fair, it is just Lewis's scattershot homage to his influences. We are faced with a Stan Laurel character in a strikingly unfunny sequence.

The Cheap Detective is full of cheap jokes and cheap laughs, and I found myself rather amused by it. A pastiche of The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca (with one or two interesting references to contemporary neo-noirs like Chinatown), written by Neil Simon and directed by Robert Moore.
