What I don't get about the "AI as jobless future" scenario is where the money comes from. Gates says tax the companies for using the AI agents, but if no humans are working, who is paying the companies for the AI services they're providing so the companies can pay taxes?

Notably, travel times also did not increase outside the congestion zone. This mirrors what we have seen in other aggregate congestion pricing impacts. For example, it was predicted that drivers would change their routes to avoid the zone, creating new congestion; this, too, did not happen.

To be fair, this is exactly what people said about Uber and Lyft. And there have been studies about how much more people drive when they don't have to worry about parking on one or both ends of their trip. There's little reason to think driverless cars won't lead to an explosion in VMT in cities.

Yes! Image a future where parents put their kids in driverless cars to take them to school while they themselves get in different cars to go to work. Instead of one or two cars chaining trips, now you might have four separate cars making four separate trips. Would be a disaster at scale.

American railroads have refused to take electrification seriously for decades. Maybe after they go bankrupt we can buy the tracks for pennies on the dollar, adopt a European-style system of time slot leases, and electrify. Nahh, we'll just subsidize them and expect nothing in return.
