Cis people do not understand how much trans people's rights have regressed in just 5 years. 5 years ago, there were none of these restrictions. 19 states banned legal recognition 21 states have bathroom bans 8 states ban gender marker changes on DLs 25 ban gender affirming care for trans youth

FYI there is no "real" reason why Rome "fell." Its power waned for the usual, mundane reasons: widening gap between rich and poor, inability to maintain infrastructure, incompetent leadership, pointless wars, endless persecution of marginalized groups who performed vital labor, etc.

I actually think the trillionaire saying his AI tool will remake a movie without the Black and trans actors in it should be a bigger story because it’s a perfect example of why the ruling class wants AI to succeed: so they can remake reality without those they deem undesirable - every nazi’s dream.

so like lemme weigh in on this as someone who is more financially comfortable than many in my generational cohort: everything I have gained seems precarious and temporary because I know the people with real money will take it all from me the second they get an opportunity and no one will protect me.

And the sad part is that same type of racism is currently tearing our welfare states apart in Scandinavia. Because the overwhelming white majority would rather strip away their own rights completely than give any opportunity to a brown or black person

As a Dane living in Denmark I can only agree. A bike is literally just transport. I have never purchased any biking specific clothes, but I’ve biked to work/school almost every day since I was 6. And if you get a basket on the back you can go grocery shopping as well

If I knew viewing Guernica would put money directly into the pockets of a still living Pablo Picasso, who had announced publicly that he would be using that money to terrorize, harm, and kill women, not only would I not go view Guernica, it would fundamentally change the meaning of Guernica as art.

There's no reason for Iran to attack NATO nation Turkey—but a drone did. Iran denies sending it. There's no reason for Iran to attack a UK base in Cyprus—but a drone did. Iran denies sending it. Now Azerbaijan has been attacked. Iran denies involvement. I think this is Israel.

The whole bio is worth a read, but the end is particularly fun
Text block reading:

One other thing of note, because W. Earl Brown gets asked it often and it seems as hoity-toity as speaking of himself in the third person: The "W" was added to his name upon joining the Screen Actors Guild. The guild has a rule that actors can not have the same name as another actor. He was told that there was an "Earl Brown" and a "William Brown", hence he became W. Earl Brown (a name he remembered from the label of an Elvis Presley record)... Then when his recording work in Sacred Cowboys necessitated his joining the songwriter's rights association, ASCAP, (where songwriter W. Earl Brown was represented) he had to become "William Earl Brown." It's confusing - he knows.

My favourite example of this is W. Earl Browns IMDb bio
IMDb page for W. Earl Brown, the first part of the biography is visible and reads:

As a rule, W. Earl Brown does not usually speak of himself in the third-person, however the Internet Movie Database will not accept biographical information written in the first person, therefore:

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

This image is a meme using characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to express a strong opinion on labor strikes within the video game industry.
The first character asks if game developers should strike.
The second character responds that all exploited workers should strike.
The first asks if this is true even if it disrupts the industry.
The second emphasizes that it should happen especially if it causes disruption.

WH sources say Venezuela's opposition leader committed the "ultimate sin": She accepted the Nobel Peace prize. “If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one said. www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

Although Machado ultimately said she was dedicating the award to Trump, her acceptance of the prize was an “ultimate sin,” said one of the people.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” this person said.

That’s one of the reasons I, a Bullshit fan, was frustrated hearing Penn talk about libertarian politics. Because he couldn’t see the contradiction. I think he fell into the trap of believing he was representative of party values. Which is why it’s nice to see him take a stand when he saw he wasn’t

A reason that anti-mask rally was a turning point, was that he thought it was gonna be anti-over regulation. He thought it was going to be about “we don’t need regulations to do what’s right” aka wearing masks. Then when he found what it actually was it shattered his illusion of libertarianism

it's wild how the positive use cases are like "save 5 minutes reading a long doc" and "write a generic email faster" and the negative use cases are "get encouraged to dive deeper in psychosis, misogyny, or suicidal thoughts" and we're still on the fence about overall value

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

It really can't be said enough: the goal of the "anti-woke" movement was always to destroy social norms against bigotry. And it worked. And there's a whole lot of purportedly "left" thinkers & commentators who helped it -- indeed, it couldn't have been done without them. They should feel bad.
