The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

Tax these people out of existence. Ban billionaires, they serve no socially useful purpose for any civilisation that has hopes of a future.

Britain’s big four banks are on track for a record-breaking year, buoyed by high interest rates. Now their lobbyists are out in force, warning the government not to tax them more, so they can continue to give huge bonus packages and payouts to shareholders.

'Operation Mincemeat' has ruined any interest in this film for me. Take a potentially really exciting WW2 true story and make it into a typically boring British movie. 'Pressure' looks exactly the same, but starting with a boring sounding WW2 story instead

"BRITAIN BECOMES DUMP FOR THE NAXI EXILES. Scores of Jews and other exiles are being smuggled into England in small foreign ships, for £25 a time." Daily Mirror, 1938. Sound familiar?
Headline: Britain becomes dump for the Nazi exilesSCORES of Jews and other exiles, abandoning their homes in the Nazi terror, are being smuggled into England by the captains of small foreign ships who slink inside the three-mile limit at night and put ashore their human cargoes for £25 a time.
This smuggling, once sporadic, is now a racket earning thousands of pounds weekly for captains of French, Dutch and Belgian trawlers.
It was exposed entirely at Hove, yesterday when two foreign seamen were gaoled for smuggling a German in at Shoreham harbour last Monday.
Britain's immigration officers are helpless. They know that Hitler is dumping his unwanted people here. They cannot stop other Mid-European Governments seizing on Britain's lethargy to lower their own unemployment figures.
Every day refugee Spaniards, Jews, Ger mans and Austrians are slipping into Britain Employment agencies are inundated by fran-tic appeals from foreigners who, scared by European unrest, want British security.

Why is George Osborne not widely seen as the most disastrous Chancellor the UK had in decades? One reason is the r/w media did not frame him that way. He was an economic & social vandal who damaged the fabric of UK society. For a host of reasons he should be nowhere near the British Museum.

Energy prices are going up AGAIN – this time by an average of £276. But we don’t have to accept a future of permanently rising bills. This government can stop prices spiraling – here’s how 🧵

Opponents of rent controls typically argue that rent controls would lead to landlords selling up. Of course that presents risks. But it also presents a historic opportunity. Because when a landlord sells, the home does not vanish – only the owner changes!

Urgh British insecurity about the reality of our status in the world is such a millstone around our necks. Who cares that the new Heathrow runway will be bad for the UK and its economy if we can tell foreigners we have a bigger airport than them?

Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

Well, well, well - if it isn’t the consequences of our own actions. It would appear that migrants are not, in fact, the fiscal drain we’ve been told they are by years if we go by the £4bn to £6.5bn shortfall that’s been caused by the precipitous drop in numbers under this government. Funny that.

This is incredibly alarming. We cannot go on like this. We need more advocacy for climate action, not just from the environmental movement, but from the political centre.
Screenshot of a Guardian article titled “Huge El Niño projected to cause more than 450,000 deaths by February.” The article, by environment editor Damian Carrington and dated 23 September 2026, says climate scientists estimate that additional heat from a projected strong El Niño could cause more than 450,000 deaths by February, on top of existing climate-crisis-related deaths. It mentions impacts across Indonesia, India, Nigeria and the US, as well as additional deaths from droughts, wildfires and flooding.

It seems like the police are assuming the far-right losers are 'looking for an excuse' to do more damage and so must be given maximum space. In fact, they are turning a big dial that says 'thuggery' on it and constantly looking over at the state for the slightest sign of consequences.

I mean, at this point, it's fairly unambiguously paramilitarism. You've got a non-state actor using violence to further political objectives. It's flagrantly in breach of democratic principles several times over. Inaction would be the most ultimate failure of a democratic government.
