Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

i accidentally deleted that "a thought on coltrane" post, so here it is again --
Coltrane was known for relentlessly practicing for hours and hours every day, even during gigs while his bandmates were soloing. What was he trying to do?

Iyer: We have to understand him as a composer.

He was working on ideas. He wasn’t just trying to sound cleaner and faster than the next guy. He was just like any composer who lives into their 100s and keeps creating. There’s always this “What’s the next idea?” And then also, “How do I put that idea into practice as a player?” It was processing ideas and trying to develop them.

We use the word practicing, but what do we mean?

It’s the word we use in classical music to say I’m trying to polish this rendition of this piece. But that’s not what most of us in creative music are doing. We’re trying to refine the process of creating. He knows that there’s more than what he knows, and he knows there’s a way to access it. That is already here.

So, it’s about trying to open that door. It’s not about refining anything. It’s about those doors that you’re trying to open. That’s why any of us play. That’s why any of us are artists. Because we’re interested in channeling something from beyond ourselves and being that conduit so that we can bring that healing property and that magic to others.

bloomberg has a fun article today arguing that the Cybertruck is the biggest flop in automotive history. it includes this glorious graph.
A graph showing how the edsel and Cybertruck both performed based on their sales target and actual year one and year two sales. The edsel was expected to sell 200k units in its first year. It sold slightly over 50k, and less than 50k the next year

The Cybertruck had a sales.target of 250k in its first year. They sold around 40k, the next year they sold about half as many.

Operational biological sex definitions applied to hummingbirds (Bleiweiss 1992; Bleiweiss 1999; Bleiweiss 2001; Diamant et al. 2021; Falk et al. 2022; Falk et al. 2021) where sex is operationally defined by binary plumage phenotypes in the field. Each row depicts a wild individual hummingbird with morphological traits (beak length, plumage coloration), behavioural traits (territoriality) and their unobserved gamete type. This example illustrates how the same individual can be operationally defined as one sex in the field (based on external phenotypes) but classified as a different sex based on their gametes (which cannot be easily observed in the field), highlighting how definitional choices shape scientific reporting of sex.

You can criticize Eisenhower for a lot of things but he was right on this.
A quote from Dwight Eisenhower's 'The Chance for Peace' speech, text: Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.

It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.

It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway.

We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.
