🦄 Musée entomologique illustré t.1 Paris: Rothschild, 1876-1878. [Source]
Illustration from "Musée entomologique illustré t.1" (Paris, 1876-1878) depicting 16 detailed beetles, including a variety of scarabs and dung beetles. The central beetle is large with prominent, branching horns resembling a unicorn's horn, while others show diverse shapes, colors, and textures, such as striped, ridged, and smooth carapaces. Each beetle is numbered for identification. The pale yellow background contrasts with the muted tones of the beetles, emphasizing their anatomical features, legs, antennae, and distinctive horn-like protrusions, highlighting the historical scientific focus on entomology and beetle morphology linked to the "unicorn" keyword.

The image features three main figures: Fig. D depicts a dome-shaped structure covered in fine hair with alphanumeric annotations; Fig. E shows a cross-section of a similar structure revealing hair follicles and smooth inner tissue; Fig. F presents a cross-sectional view with branching red veins or nerves surrounded by dense hair. Below are smaller inset illustrations showing circular and spherical anatomical details connected by slender stems. The illustration focuses on the wolf's hair and internal microscopic anatomy, emphasizing texture and internal complexity.

A thought on databases vs narratives. Narratives are designed to be consumed in a particular sequence. This aligns circumstances of production & consumption: the writer is 'first reader' (Lyotard). Such alignment is an edge case for DBs, where write/read queries often group elements very differently

🐑 Wild oxen, sheep & goats of all lands, living and extinct, . London, R. Ward, 1898.. [Source]
Illustration of two West Caucasian tur sheep standing on rocky terrain with distant mountains. The sheep have brown fur, slender bodies, and black hooves. One sheep is standing alert, showing its long, curved dark horns and small beard, while the other is grazing, bent forward with similarly curved horns. The drawing highlights the distinct curly shape of the horns and the sheep’s muscular build and features a naturalistic, detailed style typical of 19th-century wildlife art. The background is minimal, focusing attention on the animals. The image is a historical zoological plate from 1898.

Illustration from "Fauna Japonica" (1833-1850) showing a detailed, elongated snake labeled "Hydrophis pelamidoides." The snake's body is covered with small hexagonal scales and slightly curved in an S-shape, featuring a rounded head with visible eyes and nostrils. Surrounding the snake are enlarged sections of its scale patterns and two simple leaf-shaped forms, likely representing scale details or anatomical parts. The monochrome, finely detailed engraving focuses on the snake’s texture and morphology, with no depiction of any bat despite the "bat" keyword.
