If comfortable respirators are available, people will wear them, and infections will go down. If infections go down, infection control will face difficult questions about why they didn't do it earlier. So infections can't be allowed to go down. So comfortable respirators can't be offered.

This is a key point that people still don't understand about why labor happens in China, and where human manufacturing wins over robotic automation: Stuff doesn't move to China just because the labor is cheaper. Stuff moves to China because the defect rate is lower, and manufacturing logistics.

Remember: the current state of horror is largely the result of backlash against the idea white men should be held accountable. Just the mere suggestion white men might be taken to task. We as a nation dared toy with the barest rumor of justice and equality. And this is what happened.

Here is how politics, in most cases, works: Rich and powerful interests, whether in fossil fuels, finance, big tech, media, meat, pharma or foreign governments, make a demand, and use their sophisticated tools to persuade a government to adopt it. The government adopts it. Please read whole🧵

We can spend our lives debating the justifications (I more or less have); but we are wasting our time. What we need is a massive clampdown on the influence of money over politics, including lobbying transparency, campaign finance reform, an end to the revolving door between politics and lobbying.

Then the government must find a find of selling this policy, which might be very harmful. It will argue that it’s essential for “growth”, “jobs”, “international standing” etc. Opponents will then argue these claims, engaging in the great democratic tradition of “debate”. But debate is irrelevant.

That’s because the decision has already been made. The issue being debated is merely the post-hoc justification. Where decisions happen and where debate happens are different places. The idea that debate leads to policy outcomes is a fiction designed to create an impression of democratic consent.

Hydrogen production from natural gas and coal contributes 2% of the world's annual CO2 emissions. It would be prudent to replace this dirty product with clean green hydrogen and use less overall. The oil and natural gas industry does not want you talking about this necessary solution.

6/10 for those who do it, but bad for the system as a whole, and so it only "works" when a very few countries do it and the rest don't notice. The problem, as Joan Robinson warned, is that eventually everyone notices, and trade breaks down.
