I love this story. The simplest things we do can be the most important. I'm going to spend some time in the vegetable garden we created with our kids during that first Covid summer. Vegetable gardens. Pollinator gardens. Minecraft worlds. Building is good. #Gift 🎁 www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
It’s understandable, and instructive. The world is a lot at the moment and doing something you enjoy, something that occupies your whole brain, is an antidote. Ideally hobbies include the outdoors and other people and especially your kids, but what matters is you do it. Because in the end, in Minecraft or elsewhere, what you’re really building is you.

Important investigation from the Globe. "Alberta sovereignty has become a talking point for senior American leaders and influential conservative voices, giving legitimacy to a separatist cause that might otherwise have been a fringe provincial movement." #Gift 🎁 #abpoli #ableg
A Globe and Mail investigation has found that Republican political operatives were on the ground in Alberta this year to assist the separatist campaign in its bid to leave Canada, while harbouring their own aspirations for the province to secede.

The Globe also found that when Alberta separatist leaders went to Washington to meet with the U.S. State Department, they offered up key assets from the province’s resource portfolio, including access to fresh water and royalties on crude oil, in exchange for help transitioning to independence.

Through interviews with The Globe on both sides of the border, people involved in politics, the corporate sector and Alberta’s pursuit of separatism have described persistent efforts by figures in the U.S. administration and conservative political establishment to support groups seeking American expansionism and independence for Alberta.

“On average, we found that employees do become more productive when you let them work from home at least some of the time,” said Mang. “First of all, they become more productive because they actually generate more output per hour.”

The ability to generate more output could be as a result of enhanced employee well-being from reduced stress, increased happiness and enhanced job satisfaction, all positive outcomes of working from home, according to Mang and Anwar’s research article.

“Very good. Very, very good,” Zidane said when asked to evaluate Jacquet’s performance against Italy. “Brave. He wasn’t afraid to come out a long way. Very good in the duels. He was, once again, very good. I said it four times.” #Gift 🎁 #LFC
The most impressive thing about Jacquet is that he has looked so assured in stepping up to another level at club and international level in the opening months of the new season. This time last year he was just beginning to establish himself in the first team at Rennes. Twelve months before that he was on loan to Clermont Foot 63, playing in Ligue 2. He had only made 54 league appearances (31 for Rennes, 23 for Clermont) before this season began, but is looking right at home when starting big games for Liverpool and France.

I don't describe a lot of stories as a must-read, but this one should be for Toronto voters. I heard the words 'ideologically rudderless ambitionist' used to describe a different politician. But I think they apply to Brad Bradford, too. #GiftLink 🎁 #ToPoli #BikeTO www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
I’ll have more on Chow in a later column. But the Bradford conversations have been striking for their near uniformity. Most of the people I’ve spoken to, from across the political spectrum, don’t disagree with Bradford so much as they dislike him as a person. Several supporters told me they found Bradford weirdly intense. Chow backers — including many who once stood with Tory — and those with no horse in this race went much further. They told me — almost to a person — that they find Bradford unprincipled and disloyal.

This is more than just the normal political griping. For whatever reason, many who have worked closely with Bradford over the past eight years think he is almost uniquely unlikable. I’m not sure I’ve ever covered anyone who inspires so much personal vitriol. Many — and not just progressives — think he would be a terrible mayor, not because he believes in awful ideas but because they don’t think he believes in anything at all.

But taking on the full cost of building the thing, when private proponents didn’t want to touch it even with those other supportive policies, basically means betting on demand (and the supply to meet it) beyond what the industry itself is willing to do. That’s deeply weird.

"In Canada, every provincial premier, of every political stripe, is guilty of adhering to the new climate denialism. It is now clear, however, that today, our country’s leading practitioner is Prime Minster Mark Carney." #CdnPoli
The essence of the idea is this: while conventional climate denialism simply refuses to accept the reality of human-induced climate change (think Donald Trump), this new form of denialism sees our political leaders assure us they understand and accept the scientific warnings about climate change — but they are in denial about what this scientific reality means for policy and/or continue to block progress in less visible ways. Others, perhaps more kindly, call this “all-the-above policy-making,” the inclination of political leaders to tell the public that we need not make hard choices. Whatever term one uses, the result is the continuing sorry state of Canadian political non-leadership on the defining challenge of our time.
