George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Here is how politics, in most cases, works: Rich and powerful interests, whether in fossil fuels, finance, big tech, media, meat, pharma or foreign governments, make a demand, and use their sophisticated tools to persuade a government to adopt it. The government adopts it. Please read whole🧵 31914398

Simunch @simunch1.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Accurate analysis. In your second post in your thread you wrote "find a find" which I presume you meant "find a way". Only pointing it out really as no-one else has. 000

slowlydrowning.bsky.social @slowlydrowning.bsky.social · 29/09/2026And it feels like it's getting worse, whereas in he past it felt we were moving in the right direction from time to time (under sine Labour governments), albeit slowly. 010
Dave Hargreaves @davehargreaves.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Remove the money from the politicians along with their outside interests unless its a proffesion they must maintain while an MP, such as a doctor or maybe a barrister, but no payed work. Make any political donations none partisan only to a general fund which is then equally divided amongst all MPs. 1143
MOKTOP @moktop.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Powerful companies and governments have colluded like this for centuries. We should all know this and yet so many people are blind or deaf to the teachings of history. 0162

Sir Basil @sirbasil.bsky.social · 28/09/2026It's no longer 'democracy' really. It's a plutocracy....and often it's no longer even hidden as though there's no shame in it any more 2433
Eddie Climate 🇺🇦 @eddieclimate.bsky.social · 28/09/2026In other words we don't have democracy... our governments of whatever colour are controlled by these rich and powerful interests. 050
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Then the government must find a find of selling this policy, which might be very harmful. It will argue that it’s essential for “growth”, “jobs”, “international standing” etc. Opponents will then argue these claims, engaging in the great democratic tradition of “debate”. But debate is irrelevant. 432448
Mike Honey @mikehoney.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I’m sure this is quite accurate for the UK and many other places. But it’s tempered somewhat in Australia, where any legislation including budget measures is proposed by “the government“ from the lower house, but must the pass a vote in the upper house. 240
seacide @antiseacide.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I prefer the phrase 'operates' over 'works' here, because politics clearly isn't working for society. It's failing miserably. 040
Edward Harkins @edwardhar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026A script. Fake democracy mode: Unelected, unaccountable big corporates & multi nationals; elected govts; govts lobbied & regulators captured then comply/facilitate; electorate set aside; wait 'till next election, rinse & repeat... 052

Chris W @wray1984.bsky.social · 29/09/2026That's a true account of how power works. But how are you supposed to correct that? Just suggesting ideas for reform isn't going to do it. The reforms would have to be carried out by the very people your criticising. 000
GreenerFutures @greenerfutures.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Now add to the mix an oligarch owned, over-concentrated media landscape, focused on manufacturing consent for *their* opinions and it makes for truly disheartening reading. 0101
