Why would the world’s largest net importer of fossil fuels in a volatile geopolitical region invest almost a trillion into the energy transition? The story tells itself, doesn’t it. bsky.app/profile/aarn...

perhaps we should buy these cheap, cheap, other nation subsidized solar panels and batteries. I like a bargain. Most people like bargains. I hear they deploy fast and don't cause a big mess just from operating unlike some other energy sources.

Context: 300k tonnes of diesel = 93 million gallons. US uses 160 to 170 million gallons per day - so 300k tonnes would last 13-14 hours. Total order of 1.8 million tonnes = ~82 hours of US use = ~3 days 10 hours. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Carney's pitch has tried to rhetorically balance the new fossil fuel agenda with a recognition that clean electricity will be key for future economic competitiveness. But the new data shows our power grids are getting dirtier due to gas (and will get worse!) if he sticks with his plans.

… is that it’s a divisive distraction that pretends that immolating our environmental laws can somehow render the data center buildout as currently conceived compatible with stabilizing the climate. It can’t.

If comfortable respirators are available, people will wear them, and infections will go down. If infections go down, infection control will face difficult questions about why they didn't do it earlier. So infections can't be allowed to go down. So comfortable respirators can't be offered.

This is a key point that people still don't understand about why labor happens in China, and where human manufacturing wins over robotic automation: Stuff doesn't move to China just because the labor is cheaper. Stuff moves to China because the defect rate is lower, and manufacturing logistics.

Remember: the current state of horror is largely the result of backlash against the idea white men should be held accountable. Just the mere suggestion white men might be taken to task. We as a nation dared toy with the barest rumor of justice and equality. And this is what happened.

We can spend our lives debating the justifications (I more or less have); but we are wasting our time. What we need is a massive clampdown on the influence of money over politics, including lobbying transparency, campaign finance reform, an end to the revolving door between politics and lobbying.

Then the government must find a find of selling this policy, which might be very harmful. It will argue that it’s essential for “growth”, “jobs”, “international standing” etc. Opponents will then argue these claims, engaging in the great democratic tradition of “debate”. But debate is irrelevant.

That’s because the decision has already been made. The issue being debated is merely the post-hoc justification. Where decisions happen and where debate happens are different places. The idea that debate leads to policy outcomes is a fiction designed to create an impression of democratic consent.
