One aspect of shared governance that isn't talked about much is the inherent imbalance of knowledge and expertise. Boards are meant to work together with faculty in part bc faculty know things boards don't, and vice versa Boards increasingly are taking total control but with key knowledge deficits

The correct explanation for the global rise of far-right politics: 1. The cost of publishing to large audiences collapsed - first text, then video. 2. Competition for public attention hugely increased, forcing publishers to play to audiences’ biases/resentments. 3. Radicalization feedback loop.

As this piece notes, SCOTUS has effectively handed itself a discretionary Goldilocks Rule that lets them give Trump de facto victories without explicitly having to rule in a way that might backfire under a Democratic president. Challenge right away? Unripe! Challenge later? Too close to voting!

Again, a reminder that a mere 35 years ago, a Republican POTUS led a broad international coalition, under United Nations auspices, to reverse the illegal & unprovoked violation of the territorial sovereignty & the seizure of the oil resources of another country.

The US built the greatest talent magnet ever, attracting the smart, skilled, and striving. They’d come to study, then stay and build things here, or leave with positive impressions and fruitful connections. Helped make the US wealthy and powerful. Then America chose to throw it away. And for what?

Part of Trump’s mass appeal (and of why he’s so dangerous) is that he really seems to share Joe Barstool’s worldview that there are no complex problems: Everything has a simple brute solution, which previous leaders were somehow too stupid or weak to deploy.

What problem is Trump's new global 10% tariff meant to solve? If it's about leverage, ask: How much leverage do you get from a tariff that disappears in 150 days? If it's onshoring: Who builds new factories based on tariff that disappear before the factory is built? It's a tax. That's all it is.

Really excellent piece from @rajakorman.bsky.social, highlighting that the core barrier to the RMB rivaling the euro & the dollar as a major global reserve currency is that China's domestic financial markets are not remotely developed or globally integrated to the point that this is feasible.

2/ The Danish head of its CDC is like: are you fucking crazy? We are a small country with universal healthcare. You shouldn't do what we do. We should do what you used to do.
Health officials in Denmark and Germany said they were baffled by the Trump administration’s push to emulate their countries. Traditionally, they have looked to the United States as a leader for its meticulous process of review and recommendation of vaccinations.

The officials noted that the childhood vaccination schedule in the United States had been tailored for the country’s large and diverse population and patchy system of medical care. Denmark and Germany have comprehensive free prenatal care and an infant mortality rate that is about half of that in the United States.

“It’s not at all fair to say look at Denmark unless you can match the other characteristics of Denmark,” said Anders Hviid, who leads research on vaccine safety and effectiveness at the Statens Serum Institut, Denmark’s equivalent of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Democrats would be crazy not to make this comment super-famous tomorrow when the Senate debates health care. Republicans don’t want you to be cared for as a patient when you’re sick. They think of you as a “consumer”—and tough luck if you don’t have the money for the care you need.
