It’s been two years since Ontario Place West Island was destroyed for a planned private spa. Hundreds of trees were cut down - here’s a snapshot of the many species who lost habitat. 🧵
Side-by-side comparison of a landscape on the Toronto waterfront. In one scene, an island is covered in trees reflected in a still channel of water. The other image of the same place shows a barren stretch land with a pile of rubble in the centre.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

The people on the sidewalk: a) significantly outnumber the drivers in cars and b) are here to spend time and money in this neighbourhood. The drivers in these mostly empty cars are: a) trying to drive AWAY from this neighbourhood as quickly as possible, and yet b) are given most of the road space

Some wildly poor economics from Calgary's blanket rezoning. 1. If no one will buy it, you've priced it too high and it's not a starter home. 2. If no one buys such houses, no rowhome conversions. 3. Ask your grandkids if you should spend $20k to block their friends without inheritances from homes.
Similar concerns are being raised by other homeowners, including Arden Conley, who has lived in Calgary’s Montgomery neighbourhood for decades and is facing a proposed eight-unit development next door.

“I’d love to pass this onto a family, a young family and whatnot as a starter home,” Conley said. “I can’t do that now … nobody’s going to buy it.”

He said he has already spent thousands trying to challenge the project.

“I’ve got over $20,000 invested into this already to appeal this … $20,000 of my grandchildren’s inheritance,” he said.

In the 1990s, this mistake was reversed, and today the restored waterway boasts one of the most vibrant pedestrian environments in Scandinavia.🧵

"That's the kind of guy that Phil Verster is," the source said. "Like 'I know I'm being rude, and I'm doing it to assert my dominance over you.""
The Crosstown source echoed that characterization of Verster's dealings with Crosslinx. He would deny any claims, which would force the contractor into a cash crunch, and Verster would "then leverage that to pay less than they should under the terms of the contract," the source said.

"Problems that could be solved easily, fester and become major problems that drive delays and significant additional costs, because the attitude is not, 'We're going to work together in the best interest of this project? The attitude is, "This is your problem."
