Why does this matter? In part because human beings have human rights regardless of criminality. But, also: The vast majority of incarcerated humans get out. As both provincial and federal governments move to incarcerate more people, we should ask how we're setting them up for success upon release.

Inbox just now. Between C-5 and C-39 (and there will likely be project- and job action-specific lawsuits as well as ones launched challenging the bills themselves) Build Canada Strong is a stimulus package for lawyers.
CUPW vows to resist and push back against Bill C-39 September 25, 2026

Ottawa - The National Executive Board (NEB) of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has passed a resolution vowing to resist and push back against the implementation of Bill C-39.

“This bill is a complete betrayal of all Canadian workers,” says Jan Simpson, CUPW National President.

“Without the right to strike, workers simply have no bargaining power to negotiate fair deals with their employers.”

CUPW says the bill proposes changes to the Canadian Labour Code that would “undermine workers' constitutional right to strike and the fundamental principles of free and fair collective bargaining.” This includes giving the Minister of Labour near total discretion to intervene in bargaining and end strikes.

“No government or Minister of Labour should have the unilateral authority to interfere with workers' constitutional rights or determine when those rights can be exercised,” CUPW’s resolution read. This legislation will not bring labour peace. Nor will it “Build Canada Strong” in the face of a trade war with the United States. Rather, it will negate with the stroke of a pen important Charter rights workers have secured through generations of workers’ struggle. These rights have empowered workers to negotiate better wages, decent working conditions, paid time off, job security, health benefits, and dignity on the job.

“The Carney government didn’t give us our rights, and it is not going to take them away now.”

The fightback starts now.

In solidarity
