A common theme that drives me absolutely wild with elections/polling these days: 1. Right wing wrecks everything 2. Left of centre figure elected 3. Left of centre can’t fix all the damage in 5 seconds so the right wing, who have got 10x worse in the meantime, lead polls again/win next election

One thing I'm learning about myself through this experience is that I actually have a pretty massive amount of local pride, and I do get wound up quite easily if anyone trash talks my beloved neighbourhood.

Someone asked in neighbourhood Facebook group: what is your favourite thing about Levy? Kinda disconcerted there's a whole bunch of ppl who answered sarcastically like "the vape shops" or "the way out" or just plain "nothing". Why would you ever live in a place if you like nothing about it?

Local Ukip branch continues to be a strange combination of industrious (they have leafleted our block in every election) and lazy (they “leaflet” it by dropping a pile of leaflets in the vestibule of the ground floor of the block).

Condemnation is pure hot air if in the next breath you’re telling everyone you’re doing your best to give the fascists what they want, just without the masks
In fact, these are scenes we have not seen on British streets. Immigration needs to be deal with, I will be the first to say that and we are dealing with it. The boat crossings have been halved since six years ago, net migration is down massively.

No, Mr Emanuel, I believe you misunderstood. The Diet of Worms was a formal assembly where Martin Luther refused to recant his religious teachings. Also, as the old chestnut goes, he may not live forever but I'm sure it ruddy well feels like it.

Can't remember where I've seen it. Public health/epidemiology research presentation. Was supposed to be "Rate of STDs in men who have sex with men"-instead it said "in men who have sex with me". Then: "A random sample of 500 participants took part in the study".

I remember though when JRM suggested that the solution to the problems raised by Brexit in Northern Ireland could be solved by the Republic of Ireland leaving the EU. Had fun explaining it to my Romanian mum: Her, befuddled: What is he, stupid?? Is he crazy?! Me, exasperated sigh: Yes. Yes he is.

Today I learned that the American medical cannabis rights activist who distributed weed brownies to AIDS patients in the 80s and 90s was named - wait for it - Mary Jane Rathbun. Just like how Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive and and Thomas Crapper popularised the modern toilet.

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

If the result of far right bullying is "the RNLI branch closes" - the bullies are winning. If the result of far right bullying is "the RNLI branch continues to serve, while receiving more donations than usual" - that's how we beat the bullies. For that we need swift police action though.

Given they are no longer British, perhaps we should deport them to those countries that the refugees supposed to be housed came from. I mean, they'd have found it perfectly safe and acceptable to send the refugees there, right? That should also satisfy those of them who argue that "Britain is full"

PSA: surveys on social media are totally meaningless & 'share to increase sample size' makes absolutely no difference to that. They are representative of the exact people who chose to take part and no one else. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

I wouldn't go quite as far as "AI needs to be permanently babysat by someone who knows how to do the whole task without AI", but I draw a pretty hard line at "someone who knows very precisely what the expected output should look like".
