Legalize more home based businesses (accessory commercial uses). Reduce the need to drive by letting people get basic needs met (coffee, haircuts, snacks, repairs) in their own neighborhood.

Just to be clear, social media ‘bans’, age verification, ‘device-level’ control over sexual images etc. all *increase* the power of the tech giants and the tech bros. They hand over enforcement and monitoring to the tech giants. They all give more data and more control to the tech giants.

Victoria’s planning reforms are working. There's been nearly a 50% increase in Townhouse permits since last year. Turns out it's not complicated: make building easier, and the homes follow.

'Not a fringe hobby for inner-city weirdos': What's blocking bikes in cities?
Climate change, the cost-of-living crisis and healthy lifestyle goals should make active transport like cycling a no brainer. So why does Australia struggle to build a bike culture?

I agree Housing is a Human Right. Zoning restrictions, which outlaw extra housing, are a denial of these rights and need to be over-ridden. No-one says supply is the "only explanation". The argument is that extra supply is the best way to improve affordability. We are happy to debate that.

It shocks me how many in the planning profession have no understanding why people move to big cities. And worse still how many want to spent endless piles of taxpayer cash to fight a trend that has existed for all of human history. Because tall buildings are scary.

Free PT until end of May, then half price until the end of 2026. The government must invest in more services, to help the system cope with demand, and to ensure people most affected by high petrol prices in Melbourne's outer suburbs and regional Victoria have a public transport option they can use.

Because car use, whether electric or conventional drivetrain, imposes an array of negative external costs on cities and their residents that should be internalised through pricing or pigouvian taxation. Excise, though woefully inadequate, serves that function for ICEVs as would an RUC for EVs.

So, yes, I do think greater frequency, inc. extended operating hours, would be more meaningful to help people use less fuel than attention-grabbing "free fares!" headlines. And expanding networks is hard to do overnight, but some areas also need new services to aid a switch But this is still good!

I am pretty sure I did say this already once or twice in the past, but I still can't help from pointing out that Greater Paris is basically adopting the 'what if we just put trains everywhere' transport development strategy. (It is quite sensible for the scale and population of the region.)

Given that free PT is once again entering the chat, it's worth re-upping this Climate Council analysis, which shows just how little of the Australian population is covered by "frequent, all-day" PT service, and how the PT haves and have-nots are also the socio-economic haves and have-nots.
Screenshot of table from Climate Council Shared Transport report (p. 12), showing the Big Five Australian metros with information about % of population with access to frequent PT, population, population density, mode share, and service gap between high and low income areas.
