Some Australian voters have seen the Greens’ theory of change fail repeatedly over the last 20 years, despite the Greens promising over and over again that it would work next time—but still intend to vote for them again. And I think you know the exact percentage of voters in that category

Do NIMBYs have good faith objections to density that could be accommodated? Works in Progress has published several suggestions for minimising opposition. But @resnikoff.bsky.social argues that NIMBYs are unreasonable; so compromise won’t work. 1/2

Heritage listing entire suburbs, especially right next to the CBD is incompatible with the aim of housing affordability. The Woollahra plan is a start, but there's plenty of other areas where old buildings are prioritised over people who need housing. www.smh.com.au/national/nsw...

Housing and heritage ‘can coexist’ as images reveal how towers would change Woollahra
Heritage items would be “generally” kept, and not directly demolished, to build 9400 homes – but there are two bigger risks in sight.

This is exactly why Sydney YIMBY has been pointing to Auckland as an example for years now. The supply denialists are wrong. The evidence is clear, permitting more housing results in more housing. It's not the only thing we should do, but it might be the most important thing we can do!

People talk about landlords leaving apartments vacant, holding out for higher rent. It’s the same decision as a job-seeker saying: “do I take this offer now or hold out for another job with a better salary?” Sure, you can try that for a time. But most people can’t stay unemployed forever!

Australian cities are upzoning to allow for more apartments and townhouses, with the aim of getting more homes built. But policy makers need better tools to assess how effective these policies can be. It all starts with better understanding commercial feasibility. 🧵

This is what winning looks like.
Nearly half (48 per cent) of people either strongly or tended to support increased residential density in their own neighbourhood, up from 46 per cent last year and 44 per cent in 2024. About 17 per cent of people were strongly opposed to the idea, while 18 per cent were ambivalent.

Matt Levinson, the committee’s head of corporate affairs, said: “We’ve seen [support for increased density in people’s own suburbs] gradually moving up year on year, and the number of people who oppose it gradually declining. Two-thirds of the city now see it as OK in their own neighbourhood.
