In just over two months it'll be four years since I've been living in Melbourne. Over that timeframe, I have been employed full-time in *any* capacity for exactly 16 months. I don't know what to say except I'm fucking tired of this.

Montreal’s automated metro REM is considerably surpassing ridership expectations this fall, with average daily ridership settling in at 130,000, even before the opening of the airport branch, expected next year.

ChatGPT stated that the sentence I wrote was too complex and overloaded with subordinate clauses. My apologies, sir: I was raised on potatoes and classical Russian literature.

This train is truly awesome! Hope this inspires improvement on intercity rail across the US, including the Cascades route this train is going to serve: this thing can run much faster (125mph) than the speed limits on the current infrastructure allow (mostly 79mph, and in some places even less).

This thing looks like an airplane to me. The world desperately needs a transition to all-electric aviation, and it's great seeing that this has chances of happening in foreseeable future. Exciting developments indeed!

I have an increasingly strong impression that Australian transport planning is too obsessed with traffic models and is too far away from purpose-driven systems design approach. We should be talking less about statistics and human behaviour prediction and more about where the kerb should be and why.

Australian recruitment is broken in so many ways, but one very specific thing I will never understand is why provide a contact person to reach out to 'for further discussion about the role' if all said person ever does is telling you to 'send in the application via the link in the job description'.

To support WSIA and Bradfield City, public transport should offer cross-city and regionwide connections that directly lead to key places. E.g.: M1 Bankstown - Liverpool - Austral - WSIA - Luddenham West M3 Westmead - Bonnyrigg - WSIA - Greendale T2/T5 Leppington - Bradfield - WSIA - Luddenham West

A random late-night service improvement idea for Auckland CRL: Send last Onehunga-Henderson and Henderson-Onehunga trains via CRL instead of Grafton.

@patrickreynolds.bsky.social I wonder what your opinion might be on adding The Strand station to E-W line (img 1). Next to Spark Arena, ample space already available. In far future, it could accommodate a Maungawhau-type junction to help move Parnell to a central, underground location. (img 2)

Auckland got City Rail Link (two new stations, one fully rebuilt one, and 3.5 km of tunnels) for approx. $4.5bn AUD ($5.5bn NZD). For about the same amount of money, in Melbourne we are rebuilding our Sunshine station to add a couple of flyovers and two regional platforms. I have questions.

Transformative transport projects come with excellent urban design. A major component of delivering excellent urban design is removing cars from where they don't belong. Melbourne has missed on quite a few opportunities during the Metro Tunnel project, but this can change.

The problem with touch screens in cars is that you can't immediately, unmistakably touch the right spot on a touch screen without looking at it. I can't fathom why humanity decided that a touch screen as a control for any function of a car would be a great idea.

Montréal's geography has its cardinal directions designated against St.Lawrence river... that flows from South to North, which means Montréal's West is in the South, its North is in the West, etc.

In business and politics, being uncooperative where you don't have anything to gain (financially, politically, or morally) from doing otherwise is quite sensible and should generally be expected. Stakeholder management 101.

Hybrid diesel-electric trains is a good idea but Melton line needs to be electrified to the network-wide Metropolitan Trains standard, in my opinion. It is not that difficult to deliver, and it would support the Metro Tunnel operations better.

Excellent news. A great moment to remind everyone that Marohn's book, 'Confessions of a Recovering Engineer', offers comprehensive first-hand critique of conventional traffic engineering and is a must-read for anyone in the transport realm. It's brilliantly written and I can't recommend it enough.

This Sunday afternoon I can't help myself from thinking that it would've been a rather nice V/Line service improvement if some light refreshments and champagne were served on board. With such lovely weather as it is today, that would've helped to elevate the experience to the utmost levels.

Can anyone explain to me how is it possible that a levy on passenger fares were to have been used to co-fund SRL, if said passengers fares were slashed to zero for several months and have since been half-price, which is to last till the end of this year? I don't think I can make sense of this plan.

@garethdennis.uk Hey Gareth, hope you are having a great day! I am not sure if you had an opportunity to touch on this at some point on YouTube, but I was wondering if you could provide a bit of an overview of modern track engineering techniques for large stations and/or complex grade junctions?

This day exactly eight years ago I was on a short trip to Chelyabinsk, Russia. A local activist reached out and suggested I deliver a same-day impromptu lecture on transport planning for major cities. 'Sure thing', said I, for whenever I am permitted to talk about transport, I most certainly will.
