An interesting one: fight over language of the state's low/mid-rise zoning, measuring walking distance "as far as reasonably practicable, public footpaths and pedestrian crossings" Developer used route via lanes (pic) NIMBY council lent on the use of ped x-ings language. Court sided with council.

The first bit of the over-station development at Waterloo has opened, including this nice public plaza at the station's south exit. No sign of any retail tenants yet but there's still a couple more towers to come.

We would currently have a lot more art deco flats in Woollahra Council if not for 100 years of tradition of upholding bans explicitly initiated to keep the poors out. The street in Rose Bay mentioned at the end recently got declared a mid-rise zone by Minns under the LMR. 🎉

I would like to find out who in Transport NSW insisted the only way to extend the King St bike lane was to narrow the busy footpath, not narrow the road. And I want them fired.

COLEDALE, 66km from Central, is quiet station serving some suburbia, a short walk away from a small collection of shops and the beach. Its two platforms are accessed from stairs down from the road bridge - yet another inaccessible station on the line without lifts. (1/2)

Reading NIMBYs complain about traffic and news on petrol prices has got me thinking: Sydney life is so much more pleasant for me than for these people, because I rarely need to drive. When I do, it's usually on my terms. This is partly thanks to privilege, partly by design. It should be the norm.

Good to see the accessibility upgrades continue The benefits go further: not just about wheelchairs (still important) but also safety. There's many who can use stairs but probably shouldn't, and could take a stumble. Those with limited mobility, luggage, prams, etc. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x6V...

Work has started on the upgrade of Lewisham Station to add lifts, new toilets, finally fix the consistent flooding issues, and just generally give it all a tidy up. It's not a small piece of work given the tight site, much of it is underground. www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/cur...

Metro is doing peak hour testing this morning - emptying out at Sydenham and continuing west with "Bankstown" displayed on the train. Is this the first time at peak? It seems to have confused some of the real-time apps.

It's pretty hard not to be impressed with the NSW Government’s plan for Woollahra station. High density around both Woollahra and Edgecliff stations, new local centre leading down to Woollahra station, and a high quality public domain plan.

Thinking about how the Cheltenham interchange will be lame with the Westfield car park in the way. There's precedent of cutting into a shopping centre's car park and (NSW) courts handing over the land for free. Rail brings customers thus increases the centre's value, so no acquisition cost.

Exploring the South Coast line, the service is quite mediocre for NSW's 4th largest city. Many stations get just hourly trains on weekdays, 2hrs on weekends. Some have nothing around them, so fair, but others are quite built up. Even with the windy track, travel time is comparable to driving!

COALCLIFF, 59km from Central, is a basic station serving a collection of houses and a small beach. It has two platforms, an uncovered footbridge and no lifts. The station building is uninspiring, with an unused ticket office. Passengers must walk through a weird corridor to get to the platform (1/2)

STANWELL PARK, 56km from Central, is the first of a string of stations at the base of the Illawarra Escarpment. It has two rather bare platforms accessed from a pedestrian tunnel, with no lifts. The station building sits below the platforms, and is the entrance from the car park.

Good to see that the public realm at Victoria Cross is finished and some of the tenants opening up. But I'm shocked there isn't a pedestrian crossing at the station entrance. That's unusual at any station across Sydney, let alone one this busy.

There's an interesting tension here. Offices are very sensitive to location, and are often demolished after a few decades. Residential is not as sensitive, and tends to stick around way longer. I can see why Council want to preserve space for offices, but at what cost?
