Great article that also reveals how ANCAP and the police play a key role in perpetuating deadly narratives: • ANCAP reckons newer and demonstrably deadlier cars are safer because "technology" • Victoria Police reckons pedestrians are often "distracted", which evidence suggests is not a problem

$2,000,000,000 for road expansions that will make so-called congestion worse and require residents to spend $10,000 a year on car ownership is apparently money well spent. But $100,000,000 a year for a world-class bus network? Nah, can’t afford it.
Labor's pledges include $550 million to add new lanes to the Western Freeway between Melton and Caroline Springs; $494 million to duplicate Somerton Road between Roxburgh Park Drive and Fleetwood Drive in Greenvale; and $350 million to upgrade Hallam Road in Melbourne's south-east.

The benefits of free/half-price PT fares "skewed towards higher-income earners, with the top 20% of households receiving 2.2x the financial benefit received by the bottom 20%". Said it before, will say it again: free PT is useless if the network doesn't take you where you need to go.

From free transport to registration rebates, the state government’s attempt to help Victorians is disproportionately benefiting those who need it the least.

It looks like the Department of Transport and Planning has finally provided high frequency buses to Melbourne’s outer suburbs - not by actually providing high frequency buses, but by labelling lines high frequency when they clearly aren’t.

Seriously, if the money can be found for Bendigo, Ballarat, or Geelong to build a tram, then money can be found to run their bus networks at useful levels of frequency and/or coordination (which would build the demand case for light rail over time).

This is nothing but a fancy way of trying to cram more and more and more cars through the city. As with every other time we do this, the outcome will be more noise, more particulates, and more traffic violence.

Here's an idea: why not fund PT services that don't cost a generational arm and leg instead of increasing fares 40% above inflation for 40 years to pay for a vanity project dreamed up by some business guys who probably haven't used public transport in 40 years?

If we can’t afford to build the Suburban Rail Loop with high quality connection facilities (i.e., <50m between platforms and as flat as possible), then we should simply not bother building it at all.
Screenshot from the age. It reads: The immediate savings will be found by scrapping underground station interchanges at Box Hill and Glen Waverley, abolishing a second planned station entrance at Clayton, and ditching pedestrian bridges at Burwood and Cheltenham.

This is a ridiculous idea from the Libs. It will encourage more people to drive, meaning more noise and air pollution and more death and injury. It's not quite as stupid as their 2018 "grade separations for suburban arterial junctions", which was really quite stupid, but gosh it's close.

Katie Hall MP seems to think that the solution to crime and antisocial behaviour in central Footscray is to close the Nicholson St pedestrian mall and “reinvigorate” it as a traffic sewer. Because cars/drivers have never committed crime and/or been antisocial.
I am writing to ask Council to consider the future of Nicholson Street Mall by investigating the reintroduction of vehicle access and through-traffic as part of a broader revitalisation strategy for central Footscray.
When Nicholson Street was closed to vehicles in the early 1970s, it reflected the retail environment of the time.
Footscray was a thriving shopping destination, with major department stores such as the iconic Forges drawing customers from across Melbourne's west. The pedestrian mall was created to strengthen the shopping precinct by encouraging people to spend time in Footscray as suburban shopping centres, like Highpoint, began changing the way we shopped.
More than 50 years later, the retail landscape has changed dramatically. Online shopping and purpose-built commercial centres have transformed consumer behaviour, meaning the challenges facing Footscray today are very different from those the mall was designed to address.
The current model is no longer delivering the outcomes originally intended. Nicholson Street Mall is not generating the level of activity, visitation and business investment needed to support a thriving central Footscray. Concerns about safety, amenity and antisocial behaviour continue to undermine community confidence - despite the considerable efforts of Council, the Future Footscray Group, Victoria Police, community organisations and the Victorian Government - to improve outcomes in the precinct.

…
I ask Council to investigate whether reopening Nicholson Street Mall to through traffic, together with reopening the northern end of Albert Street to Barkly Street, could improve accessibility, increase visitation, strengthen passive surveillance, encourage renewed investment and support local businesses in the precinct.
I believe these options deserve to be assessed as part of the next phase of Footscray's revitalisation. I look forward to your response.

"I'm legally authorised to operate a car and I plan renewable energy but woe is me I simply cannot handle the complexity of paying for public transport" is exactly the kind of low rent energy I've come to expect from the Greens and their candidates on transport issues of late.
Wright, a former Greens candidate who now works in the renewable energy space, said he previously drove his car or rode his bike most places, but the free transport system had been a revelation.

“It’s just fantastic! And my main problem is, I just can’t organise getting myself a myki card, I lose them all the time, so it’s just a total pain … It’s too much friction,” he said.

Research shows that availability of residential parking (via stat minima) increases car ownership. Meanwhile, Melbourne CBD has had a stat maximum for residential parking for years, and there’s still an oversupply. This suggests that excess parking supply is a feature of automobility, not a bug.
