"Police said the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet." Who cares? A bicycle helmet isn't designed to protect cyclists against cars. "At this time, speed, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision, police said." Speed is absolutely a factor, to the 2nd power.

It was never beautiful. I have a fix. Fill it with trees, tables and chairs, and umbrellas or some other sort of cover. Open up bars in the surrounding area and allow them to serve patrons in the square.

Or as it's described here, "affordable" housing. Politicians love spruiking it as a solution to housing affordability, but it is anything but. What is needed is more housing across the board inflectionpoints.work/a/against-af...

Against ‘Affordable’ Housing | Inflection Points
It’s not the same as social housing, and it doesn’t help those most in need. Australia is spending big on ‘affordable’ housing—but we shouldn’t.

I've spent my whole adult life hearing how we need to prioritise old buildings over providing housing for people. And it comes from the same people who lament sprawl and the lack of public housing. Would they be OK if the housing in Woollahra was built and owned by the government? I'm guessing not

Likewise Market St has 3 lanes of one-way traffic, a parking lane for taxis, no space for bikes at all, and possibly the most overcrowded footpaths in Sydney. Yet the tunnel underneath is underused.

Such great news from @bicyclensw.bsky.social that cycling has held up in Sydney throughout winter. Anyone who says Sydney (in the city at least) is no good for riding a bike needs to open their eyes to what good infrastructure has done bicyclensw.org.au/cycling-is-b...

Cycling is booming in Sydney - even in winter!
It is clear to anyone using the inner Sydney cycleway network that more and more people are riding bikes in Sydney. But what does the data actually tell us?

Heritage listing entire suburbs, especially right next to the CBD is incompatible with the aim of housing affordability. The Woollahra plan is a start, but there's plenty of other areas where old buildings are prioritised over people who need housing. www.smh.com.au/national/nsw...

Housing and heritage ‘can coexist’ as images reveal how towers would change Woollahra
Heritage items would be “generally” kept, and not directly demolished, to build 9400 homes – but there are two bigger risks in sight.

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.
