if you wear a casio watch, the only way to set an alarm is to give it to a two-year-old and let them play with it. the only way to turn the alarm off is to bump your wrist on something eight weeks later. there is no other way to turn the alarm on or off

Having grown up in Wales, I can testify that if you are actually worried about your culture and history being under threat, the thing to do is write poetry and songs, perform plays, tell stories and organise festivals, not just sit around whining.

Why does Korea have a holiday for the alphabet? Because unlike other writing systems that evolved over centuries, Hangul was the work of one dude who solved mass illiteracy by sitting down and creating a brand new fully-formed system from scratch that anyone can learn almost instantly.

The replicability issue is foundational to my objection to LLM use in research. The temperature variable definitionally introduces randomness to outputs, and the fact that a given prompt does not generate an identical output every time means no procedure using them can reliably control variables.

Measles can reset your immune system and strip you of immunities you previously had. Covid can damage your immune system in a different way and make you more susceptible to infections. I swear to fuck people knew this in like 2021.

This prompted me to go back and check the claim that "On current DWP forecasts, from the 2024 election until 2030, Labour will have increased working-age benefit spending by a further £51.6 bn/year." It appears to be equally fictional/spreadsheet error. Correct figure is maybe £36bn..

CMS should be the biggest, most powerful department in the government because it's where we are truly world-beating. The fact that it's given to an invisible non-entity like Nandy, while government wangs on about fishing and oil drilling is so shortsighted, stupid and frustrating

Fairies are just a bee species that's discovered aposematic camouflage, which is why they disguise themselves as humans (a large apex predator). Because fashion changes much faster than phenotype they come dressed as Victorian ladies and gentlemen in hoopskirts and top hats. With stingers.

Wise visitors refused fairy food: it was tainted with toxic honey made from monkshood, foxglove, and bog rosemary, and made one hallucinate. The introduction of rhododendron gardens in the Victorian era allowed fairies to step up production, with astonishing effects on English literature.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.
