My BlueSky feed.
A screenshot from Special Branch, a tv show filmed in London in the early 1970s. There is a cafe, with a shop front covered in a kind of avocado shade of paint. It has an advert for Coca Cola or something similar in the window. The front door is open. It's called Andy's Cafe. Whatever road it's on it is at either 87 or 83, for the building next door has the number 85 painted in a fairly modernistic looking stencil font. In this episode, it's a radical bookshop of some kind. A Ford Cortina (I think) is pulling away from outside it, the fuzz having just busted the dangerous antiestablishment types that are inside it. Meanwhile, Andy's Cafe is still open for business.

Anyone saying "It's AI, look at his bass guitar" needs to bear in mind that Jack Casady really did orrible things to his basses in search of the perfect tone. Finally, in 2008 Epiphone brought out the Jack Casady Signature Model, which doesn't look home made and sounds great.

I'm not the world's greatest Manics fan, but what I like by them I absolutely love. This is one of the ones I do. Buying CD singles never had the romance of buying vinyl ones, not for me anyway, but with a song as great as this it didn't matter what format it was on. CDs were a bit of a pain though-

Not a patch on the Zoom 2 jingle, but a really interesting insight into what might have been. Any fans of the history of British TV should investigate their book. It promises to be authoritative and interesting. A glimpse into a bygone era of British broadcasting- and social history.

I'm not saying what it is because I don't want to cause a pile on, but if a certain podcast creator* is reading this and wants a hand with the sound mix next time they feature a female co-presenter so it doesn't sound like mansplaining/yet another manifestation of the patriarchy, my DMs are open.

A record I always associate with a primary school camping trip to Cuffley Camp in Hertfordshire. This song seemingly blaring out of every transistor radio we encountered. All us kids singing "Ra, Ra, Rats put in, throw your dinner in the bin" as we queued up for meals in the rain. -

If Quadrophenia is a film that says more about the time it was filmed in than the time it's supposed to have been set in, then the same is true for Absolute Beginners. As a period piece about how some people in 1985 saw 1958 it's absolutely bang on. As an accurate retelling of the book, well... -

'Songs in the Key of Life' turns fifty today. I can't recall a time it wasn't around - it came out when I was just two years old - I can still remember the esteem it was held in by my parents & their friends, but most of all, the album's deep, rich, bassy sound on our 70s stereo. #musicsky

Be My Baby and Above The Clouds by Weller were both released on the same day. But I'd only enough money for one, and it was this, purchased from Past & Present in Watford and dropped casually into a DJ set at Wendy May's Locomotion that weekend like it was a Motown hit from yesteryear. -

I bought this single second hand in the mid 80s because I liked the look of it, and wasn't at all disappointed when I listened to it. Kind of like a pub rock Who. Should've been massive. Anyway, the death has been announced of its songwriter and singer, Ronnie Golden. Sad. youtu.be/Lk6BJx3IyN4?...

This is a very Long 70s show. Absolutely brilliant if, like me, you failed to see it when it went out in 1987 because you were too busy being 17, and are watching it now, six years on from when it was set. It feels like it was made at least ten years before it actually was, but that's TVS for you.

This is precisely why I really hated the concept of Police & Crime Commissioners, directly elected along party political lines. They set a very dangerous precedent, and I am glad they are being quietly binned. (The whole thread is worth a minute or two of your time)

I’m with the person who painted “Balls To Enoch Powell” on a bridge over the canal near Leicester that I first saw as a small boy in 1975. It’s a slogan I’ve lived my life by ever since. Powell was, for all his qualifications and accolades, an idiot. People who think he was “right” tend to be too.

I know why people on low budgets hand hold lavalier mics-so as to be able to get more gain out of basic audio/video recording setups (useful if making content in shared spaces/bedrooms late at night etc) but here we have a government party MP doing it to show he's not part of a slick machine I guess

A song I’ve always disliked by a band I’ve never really got on with. That they became successful is not in any doubt. However I’ve never met anyone who’s ever claimed Radiohead was an influence on their music, except to say “we really didn’t want to sound like Radiohead”. -

Remember You're A Womble is, of course, one of the greatest records of the 70s. If it hadn't been a hit, people would be spending the kind of money on it they spend on Jeff Britton & The Spitfires or Bubbles or Twinkle Ripley 7"s.
