Mouse experiments show that Alzheimer’s disease and corticobasal degeneration tau filaments retain their distinct structures during templated seeding, supporting strain-specific tau propagation and disease modelling.

PhD Students Budding scientists from all over the world undertake postgraduate research at the LMB. Our students are creative and innovative, driving the su ...

Perforin-2 is a pore-forming protein localised to the endocytic compartments of dendritic cells and macrophages. It is reported to perform two distinct functions during immune responses: attacking int...

Abstract. Building complex RNA nanostructures requires precise molecular connectors for controlled self-assembly. Existing connectors, such as kissing loop

How the earliest structure within the unfolded state is formed during biosynthesis on the ribosome and whether it has any consequences for downstream folding remain open questions. Here, we combine 15...

Sequence-programmable directed evolution systems have great potential to accelerate bioengineering. Diversity-generating retroelements (DGRs) are natural hypermutation systems widely distributed in pr...

The emergence of a chemical system capable of self-replication and evolution is a critical event in the origin of life. RNA polymerase ribozymes can replicate RNA, but their large size and structural ...

Led by Edoardo Gianni, Philipp Holliger’s group in the LMB’s PNAC Division have identified a small self-replicating catalytic RNA (ribozyme), providing new ...

How we designed catalytic RNA functions, and what I learned holding a pipette at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

The synthesis of human genomes and other gigabase-scale genomes will require new strategies. Here, we realized key steps in our pipeline for building synthetic human chromosomes. We established: (i) t...

The design of RNA molecules with bespoke three-dimensional structures and functions is a central goal in synthetic biology and biotechnology. However, progress has been limited by the challenges of de...
