this is why we're going to win, just in case it wasn't clear. they can buy every media outlet and fund every court case, but at the end of the day, cis people are increasingly chill with trans people as they increasingly have trans people in their life who they love and cherish. we're inevitable.

This isn't just a casual observation. Fascism scholars have long made this point. It's why calling them "weird" was a more effective strategy than talking about the prices of eggs. Fascism is an aesthetic political movement - you need to make people feel embarassed and horrified by it.

Key Aspects of Rentoul's Stance on Iraq:
• Pro-Invasion: He actively argued in favor of the military action against Saddam Hussein's regime.
• Defender of Blair: Rentoul consistently defended Prime Minister Tony Blair's rationale for the war, even as public opinion turned against it.
• Criticized Opponents: He was accused of demonizing opponents of the war, suggesting they lacked compassion for victims of Saddam Hussein.

I noticed a change in the last few weeks in how the NYT describes gender affirming care. They now use the term "gender related care" in their coverage. This term had only been used sparingly (4 times) prior to this year. Now it's becoming ubiquitous in standard coverage.
A screenshot of a mobile phone screen displaying a news search feed sorted by "Newest." The visible articles are:
 * "More Trans Teens Are Choosing ‘Top Surgery’" (Apr 30) - Summary notes that small studies suggest well-being improvements but data is sparse, and some state leaders oppose the procedure for minors.
 * "For Transgender Young People, a Haven From the Outside World. With S’Mores." (Jul 12, 2024) - Describes Indigo Point as an oasis created after a barrage of conservative legislation.
 * "A Medical Frontier" (Jun 15, 2022) - Summary states that doctors providing gender-affirming care are split on how to evaluate teens.
 * "The Battle Over Gender Therapy" (Mar 17, 2023) - Notes that while more teenagers are seeking transitions, the medical community is divided on how to help them.
 * "Texas Governor Pushes to Investigate Medical Treatments for Trans Youth as ‘Child Abuse’" (Feb 24, 2022) - Notes medical providers and advocates condemned the move as dangerous.

I sort of wish y'all took this more seriously, because this attitude is a reinforcement of heterosexuality as a hierarchy. It's an acknowledgement and understanding that it's not enough to "be with" a woman, or even to father children. They define manhood as exploitation, abuse, and dominance.

In my experience there are three kinds of fantasy magic novels:
"There are three kinds of magic," said Wizzler, handing us each a balloon. "You can control tigers, you can shoot tornadoes from your fingers, or you can fly by holding your breath. The color of confetti inside your balloon will reveal which kind of power you have."
I felt the panic rising in me. What if my confetti turned yellow, indicating that I was a Tiger-Talker? My family, a long line of proud Tornado-Fingers, would disown me. Could I ever return home, bearing such shame?
I tried to calm myself as I readied the ceremonial safety pin. Green, I thought, willing my hopes into reality. Please be green.
I popped the balloon, involuntarily shutting my eyes. When I opened them, would I see the green I hoped for? The yellow I feared? What if, gods forbid, the confetti were blue?
I opened my eyes, seeing shock on the faces of my classmates. Wizzler himself stared at me, wide-eye. Looking down, I saw myself covered in confetti... purple confetti.“I don’t understand,” I growled, my body trembling with pain. “I combined eighty percent Earth-elemental mana with twenty percent Fire-elemental mana (Type B), focused through a twenty-four-sided icositetragon made of yellow topaz. This, in conjunction with my blood type, star sign, sense of humor, and nickname, should have produced a blazing column of lightning to vaporize my enemies. Instead, it made a big bubble that smells like fresh laundry. Why?”
Skullgrumbler began to laugh. “You fool! You don’t even realize…” he squealed. “You’re facing east!”“It’s whatever you want,” explained Magemaster Grampledog. “Magic is just whatever you want.”
I knew he was speaking in riddles, but I couldn’t grasp his hidden meaning. “So the rules are…”
Grampledog lit a sliver of smokereed. “No rules. You say some words and you wave a stick and whatever you want just happens. You don’t even need the stick.”
His wisdom still eluded me. I stared into his face, trying to decipher what he was really saying.
“No, listen.” Grampledog snapped his fingers and his desk turned into a pile of chicken nuggets. “I didn’t even know that would happen.” His hat then came alive and began to yodel.
“It’s pandemonium,” he explained. “It’s complete nonsense.”

“I was startled to discover just how similar the fuckery aimed at 1990s lesbians was to the dehumanizing tactics trans people are facing today” this piece reminds me of Yvonne Zipter’s “Diamonds are a Dyke’s Best Friend,” which quotes this June 1986 Chicago Sun-Times article (and many like it)
Chicago Sun-Times
Lesbians in world of athletics
Author: Bill Figel
June 16, 1986

After Connie Erickson led Niles West to the girls' state basketball championship in 1979, her recruitment consisted of a drive with her parents to the university she wanted to attend.
There was very little contact with players and coaches. If there had been more, she might have perceived something going on behind the ivy walls.

A year later, a year wiser, and a bit paranoid, Erickson transferred to continue her basketball career. Connie had been exposed to homosexual life for the first time.

"It was a mess," said Connie Erickson Brown, married and an assistant basketball coach at the University of Utah. "I went there really naive. I guess coming out of high school I didn't quite understand those things. (Female) coaches were living together and I didn't know what was going on."

Brown began to see a division among the players, one she later thought split "the straight ones and the (lesbians)."

She discovered one of her teammates was experimenting in homosexual relationships. She accepted invitations to parties only to find out "I shouldn't have walked through the door."

"These girls were telling me by the time I'm a senior, I'd be (lesbian), too," Brown said.
"These girls are telling me this and sure enough I look around at the seniors and most of them (appear to be lesbians. That's the reason I left."One of the first things Penn State coach Rene Portland brings up during a recruiting visit with a prospective player and her parents is lesbian activity.

"I will not have it in my program," Portland said. "I bring it up and the kids are so relieved and the parents are so relieved. But they would probably go without asking the question otherwise, which is really dumb."

In Portland's six years as coach, her hard-line, no-compromise approach has lost her only one recruit, who called Portland "too judgmental."
Portland's extremism is to battle the stigma all of women's sports seemingly has been forced to face: "Guilt by association."

"I don't want to say it (lesbian activity) is very prevalent, because there are some great (lesbian) people out there coaching," Portland said. "That doesn't mean they are bad coaches, as long as they stay good people. The ones that don't stay good people are the ones we should get rid of."Stories of alleged sexual misconduct and the public perception it created have tainted and overshadowed the advancement of girls sports since the introduction of Title IX in 1972 and the subsequent proliferation of girls' sports.

But that's a minor concern. Some female coaches have abused their influence and have taken advantage of teen-age girls.

"When somebody with power over somebody else either forces them into sex or seduces them into sex, that's sexual harassment," said Anne Petersen, a psychologist who deals with adolescents. "And this case fits that definition perfectly.”

Power play

"There's a power relationship there, so the girls might fear not cooperating. But there are probably a lot of cases where they just want to because everyone respects the coach, and they think if this respected person is doing it, that it's OK."Portland is concerned that the guilt by association stigma won't be overcome and the sport won't nurture its own role models, especially when administrators are fearful of hiring women for fear of lesbian activity.

"Let's just get to the stage where we hire the best person, male or female," Portland said.
"I think we are killing ourselves and a lot of it is hearsay.

"I have a fear for women's athletics," said Portland, "because people are waiting for us to do something stupid and kiss this all goodbye."

"If the fear is keeping just one girl from participating in athletics, it's one girl too many," said Mundelein College basketball coach Liz Galloway.

"Women's athletics has done too much to help too many people to let it be hurt by a few."

"Still bothered by the US cultural idea that men can only be non-romantically intimate with one another in war-like or competitive circumstances.
skaldish Follow
I'm pretty quiet about the fact I'm a transman usually, but holy shitl need to tell you about the culture shock I'm going through because it's blindsiding me.
There's a huge sense of social isolation that comes with being perceived as male, because now people are subconsciously treating me as a potential predator. All strangers, no matter their gender, keep their guard up around me.
It made me realize that there is no inherent camaraderie in male socialization as there is in female socialization-unless, of course, it's in very specific environments. And the fact I don't amnbiently experience this mutual kinship in basic exchanges anymore is an insanely lonely feeling.
You know how badly this would have fucked my mind up if I had grown up with this?

It is 4:30am and I'm mourning the loss of a privilege I didn't even know I had.
skaldish

Anyway, I'm going to figure out how to navigate this. Don't know how yet, but I'm gonna."Quote Repost of user 'azaloset' by 'Skaldish':
"If you figure it out, can you share your insights? This is a fundamental as to why im in the closet"
Answer:
"Absolutely, because it's an extremely sticky issue.

Frankly, this is something I would've never understood without living the experience.
It's now blatantly clear to me that most cis men probably experience chronic emotional malnutrition. They're deprived of social connection just enough for it to seriously fuck with their psyches, but not enough for them to realize that it's happening and what's causing it.
It's like they're starving, but don't know this because they've always been served 3 meals...except those meals have never been big enough.
This deprivation comes from all sides of aisle, by the way.
In the case of women: When I'm out in public and interact with women, all of them come off as incredibly aloof, cold, and mirthless. I have never experienced this before even though I know exactly what this composure is—the armor that keeps away creepy-ass men.
As someone who used to wear it myself, I know this armor is 100% impersonal. Nobody likes wearing it, and I can say with absolute certainty that women would dump the armor in favor of unconditional companionship with men if doing this didn't run the risk of actual assault. (Trust me when I say women aren't just being needlessly guarded.)

(cont.)Continuation of the post on the previous image:
"But I only have a complete understanding of this context because I've experienced female socialization. If I hadn't, I would've thought this coldness was a conspiracy against me devised by roughly half of the human population. Even now, with all that I know about navigating the world as a woman, I'm failing to convince my monkey-brain that this armor isn't social rejection.

And as for male socialization? Again, it seems taboo for a man to be platonically intimate with men for reasons I have yet to fully understand, but I think it boils down to a) the fact society teaches boys that it's not okay to be soft with each other, and b) garden-variety homophobia. Our media only shows men being intimate with one another when they're teamed up against a dire situation, and I'd bet real money it's a huge reason why men gravitate toward activities that simulate being teamed up against an opposing force.
But men are not machines of war. Yes, testosterone absolutely
gives you Dumb Bastard Brain, but that just makes you want to skateboard a wagon down a hill or duct-tape your friend to the wall, not kill someone.
The human species looks so much colder standing from this side.
I can see how men might convince themselves that their feelings of emotional desperation is personal weakness as opposed to a symptom they're all experiencing from White Imperialism. Because this human connection, this frith, is as essential for our wellbeing as water is.
So sick. How sick. I want to destroy this garbage.
#this is a certain perspective you gain from having crossed the gender barrier"
