Something I find useful to remember is that when you're exhausted, you go into default modes. Default modes may not be what you would choose for yourself or what you do even when you have an ounce of energy, but that's why they are defaults. Understanding this can help with so much.

A digital illustration depicting one large capybara which has a little dicorated saddle on and is being ridden by a smaller capybara that has a little knight's helmet with a visor and a feather plume perched on their head. The little one is also holding a yellow and orange striped tilting lance and there is a shield hanging from the saddle which is decorated with a blue and yellow heraldic device including checkers, an hourglass, and a feathered wing. Streaming off of the lance is an orange banner with gold lettering on it reading 'Maybe it will happen today'.

Enough politics this morning. Here's something Odyssey-adjacent I wrote a few years ago & published in LitHub this week, a meditation on Penelope's powers at the loom and possibly the first thing ever to compare her to a hip-hop dj.
“The Liquid Birds”

Pēnelopē (Πηνελόπη) is usually understood to combine the Greek word pēnē (πήνη), “weft,” and ōps (ὤψ), “face,” which is considered the most appropriate for a cunning weaver whose motivation is hard to decipher.

Penelope finds when she unweaves the shroud—
that she was making for the father of her husband,
who of course is absent and has been for years—
that when she undoes what she wove in this time
she can unweave all time that has passed and by
weaving a different pattern can shift the present
and as she weaves warp through weft, thread by thread
she finds mastery and after much practice can
unweave better than she ever wove, can unweave
her marriage back before she ever met the man
can hover with threads added and subtracted
in the passion of their first years, make one night,
one kiss, happen over and over, and then she can
unweave it all so that their marriage bed, famously
made from a rooted tree, is not yet a bed, the tree
only a sapling, crones become maidens, eagles, doves
drop from the skies to find the nests they left

A digital illustration of the giant anime robot Voltron. The one made up of five individual robot lions, not the one made out of cars and planes and stuff. His right arm is a red lion, his left arm is green. His legs are blue and yellow lions respectively. His torso and head are a black and silver lion the mouth of which is opened to reveal his humanoid robot face. He has a big red chest piece featuring a coat of arms-like crest and some red robot wings sprouting off his back. He’s seen from a dramatic forced perspective looking up from the feet against a spacey background with stars and nebular gas. He’s in the middle of one of his main moves which is where he slams his lion face fists together and draws them apart creating a glowing arc of energy that is going to form his giant multi-pronged sword that he uses to cleave whatever he’s fighting in twain. But it’s still just an energy arc between his fists and lettering following the shape of it reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

An illustration done in digital watercolor of a manatee placidly floating in green sea wearing a little horned Viking helmet of the sort they are knows not to have worn (applies to Vikings and manatees). On one flipper they are wearing a round shield and in the other flipper they are somehow without the benefit of digits holding a Viking axe. Archaic rune-ish lettering in the lower right reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

[From Wikipedia] Catbus (Japanese: ねこバス, Hepburn: Nekobasu) is a fictional character in the Studio Ghibli film My Neighbor Totoro, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is a large, grinning, twelve-legged cat with a large bushy tail and a hollow body that serves as a bus, with windows and seats covered with fur.

Here we see Catbus with a manic expression on their face as they zoom out of the sky and across the landscape leaving behind a Catbus-colored (tan and brown striped) streaking trail of jagged letters reading ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

President of MIT not mincing words today in @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2026/05/27/s...
So let me say it as clearly as I can: Without basic scientific research, supported by the kind of farsighted public investment that allows large-scale, undirected, curiosity-driven inquiry, the scientific pipeline will run dry.
In daily life, people may not feel the effects right away, or even in 10 years. But we will feel it. And when someone we love needs therapies that could have emerged but didn't or when other countries now
investing in science can launch new science-based industries or run their societies on vast resources of fusion energy or reap the benefits of quantum computing power or advanced medical breakthroughs, America will wish it sustained its leadership in scientific research here and now.
