Some of their disputes were related to business and strategy decisions, but others seemed more like ethical lapses to Amodei.
Altman, for example, had met Kanye West and offered to let him into the GPT-3 private beta in 2020, according to two people familiar with the offer. Jack Clark, OpenAl's policy director, quashed the idea, pointing out that West had recently posted a video that seemed to show himself urinating on a Grammy award and appeared to be mentally unstable. (This was before the period in which West began to publicly express admiration for Hitler.)

imo debates around AI use are often not nuanced. Usually 2 diametrically opposed views in a standoff as we all navigate our slop filled world. I also find myself reading less because of the sheer volume of nonsense I come across. Incentives and culture around this need to change. @stephenturner.us

Their relationship has grown so contentious that Mr. Vought had refused to meet with Dr.
Bhattacharya, the people said. During the session on Friday, Mr. Vought accused the N.I.H. director of funding projects that were in conflict with administration priorities, such as supporting research related to diversity and equity.

Traditionally, the N.I.H. selects projects based on expert review of their scientific merit. But Mr. Trump has sought through a series of recent directives in his second term to bring that process under political review, arguing in part that the government has been funding "woke" liberal priorities.
Friday's meeting brought to a head months of conflict between two of the attendees: Mr.
Vought of the O.M.B., who wants to impose greater political control over N.I.H. grant approvals, and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, the N.I.H. director, who is resisting those efforts, according to two people close to Dr.
Bhattacharya.

Two ideas from this article resonate 1. The “rogue AI agent” hacking incidents are more failures of test design and oversight than examples of runaway AI. 2. Focus on existential risk helps distract from concrete harms happening now from government misuse to companies using AI against workers.

Short thread: 18 months ago, as part of their assault on higher ed, Trump/DOGE/Vought terminated my friend Kelton Minor's NIH Director's award that would have allowed him to take a faculty position there. Without the funds, Columbia ultimately rescinded the position. Kelton moved to Denmark.

I agree with this. Also think it needs to be met with the reality of how tight hiring conditions are rn. Authenticity really matters, but it’s still rough out there even for people being authentic. A 2nd order effect of the AI-slop outreach I find is ppl are even less likely to read ANY outreach.
