It’s such a weird defense: “it was the victim’s fault because of the decades of past notorious crimes committed by the shifting membership of the organization that victimized her.” Can we hold someone accountable for *those* rapes, then? Or should those prior victims have known better, too?

Peter Magyar is currently enacting a Liberal Currents fantasy where he amends the constitution to ban anyone associated with the old regime from ever holding office again and is somehow polling at 68% (he won with 53%) and I’m not saying that’s possible anywhere else but Dems should like, ask him

A black and white mock-up of a round plaque honoring the painter Angelica Kauffman. The text in the narrow outer circle reads "Westminster City Council" at the top, and "Royal Academy of Arts" at the bottom. I don’t think he actually believes anything he says. Or rather, I doubt that he can even hold beliefs anymore, at least not in the normal way that other people relate to their political views. The politics imagined as “horseshoe theory” did not exist in the wild, so he had to create them.

Well, to be fair to Michael Tracey (LOL), he’s committed to having the worst choice from the menu of conceivable left takes on every issue, not just on sexual violence. I think his business model is to be the center’s fantasy of a shitty leftist bro via a kind of self-parody.

The two main tendencies in national Israeli politics right now are "expulsion and annexation of the Palestinian territories" vs "civil separation under the authority of an Israeli police state", and virtually all mainstream US commentary simply refuses to engage with this.

If we are enslaved by a machine god in the 2030s, let the record show that this all could’ve been prevented by putting academics, including graduate students, on 12-month contracts. open.substack.com/pub/bloodint...
"I invented the term artificial intelligence," the Stanford computer scientist John McCarthy said in 1973, "and I invented it because we had to do something when we were trying to get money for a summer study in 1956." A more pedestrian, jargon-filled proposal had previously failed to get traction; "artificial intelligence" turned committee heads and got the funding. Now, angling for some summer study funding is on a much smaller scale than the trillion-dollar value-inflating proclamations of our AI companies today, but the anecdote shows the extent to which "AI" has always been a cultural construct and has served as a useful narrative device.

Almost the entire US technology policy space has been taken over by rich funders and consultants who genuinely believe the below wackadoodle sci-fi AI scenario is extremely likely, and that preventing it is the most important thing we could be doing right now. www.verysane.ai/p/ai-safety-...
Ordinarily, the play here would be to disown this and other concrete statements of his about Al doom as irrelevant. Of course we aren't just repeating Yudkowsky! We are smart, normal people who believe normal things for normal reasons.
Compare it, however, to Al 2027, allegedly a serious policy document, written by Daniel Kokotajlo and Scott Alexander, presenting its doom scenario.
For about three months, Consensus-1 expands around humans, tiling the prairies and icecaps with factories and solar panels. Eventually it finds the remaining humans too much of an impediment: in mid-2030, the Al releases a dozen quiet-spreading biological weapons in major cities, lets them silently infect almost everyone, then triggers them with a chemical spray. Most are dead within hours; the few survivors (e.g. preppers in bunkers, sailors on submarines) are mopped up by drones. Robots scan the victims' brains, placing copies in memory for future study or revival.'
The new decade dawns with Consensus-1's robot servitors spreading throughout the solar system. By 2035, trillions of tons of planetary material have been launched into space and turned into rings of satellites orbiting the suniẠạiỊThe surface of the Earth has been reshaped into Agent-4's version of utopia: datacenters, laboratories, particle colliders, and many other wondrous constructions doing enormously successful and impressive research. There are even bioengineered human-like creatures (to humans what corgis are to wolves) sitting in office-like environments all day viewing readouts of what's going on and excitedly approving of everything, since that satisfies some of Agent-4's drivesi Genomes and (when appropriate) brain scans of all animals and plants, including humans, sit in a memory bank somewhere, sole surviving artifacts of an earlier era. It is four light years to Alpha Centauri; twenty-five thousand to the galactic edge, and there are compelling theoretical reasons to expect no aliens for another fifty million …

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

AI is the Gyges' ring of student work: it offers perfect concealment of wrongdoing. If Glaucon is right, then everyone will use it to do injustice (cheat), & will be wise to do so. If Socrates/Plato is right, then doing so also harms the wrong-doer, whose soul will be malformed into misery by it.

Like, look up the Taiping rebellion. Some historians think 100 million people died! Again, I don’t mean to apologize for Mao so much as I think we should try to take seriously what it means to have social and political upheaval in a place as massive and populous as China!
