I love how there is a brand of liberal/leftist who gets mad at me for saying Trump voters are dumb and evil when clearly the man they enthusiastically voted for agrees with me.

Yes, but you're forgetting the key point that Democrats are responsible for things Republicans do. If not, well, that would mean voters and non-voters are responsible for the people they choose to put in office and we can't have that.

This is a ‘good strategy’ in game theory terms if you assume Trump will punish you for not rolling over and showing deference and democrats won’t. Democrats should think about altering those incentives.

When this group of goons is ousted, and I do think they will be, there is going to be tremendous media noise about finding common ground and coming together. Absolutely not. I will not forget the people who helped hammer at the foundations of civil society and helped imprison and kill my neighbors.

"polls are very in our favor" used to be a faux pas in left-leaning circles because of the assumption it will make people complacent. Now, however, I think we are in a different situation: We need to convince fatalists who gave up to start trying again. Push, and this era will give way.

Given that there is not likely to be a national, bipartisan demand for accountability in the wake of Trump — the major distinction with Nixon — any accountability, civil or criminal, will be a partisan and political project that I think should be pursued as vigorously as possible.

This whole, "everything I don't like is Israeli," thing people keep doing is getting closer and closer to just being mask off Nazis. And Sunrise doing it is making a bid for a red-brown ecofascist alliance based on shared conspiratorial thinking blaming Israel for everything they don't like.

I think the problem is that for whatever reason, society/the media/whoever have correctly determined we need a way to reintegrate millions of people into society and from that incorrectly determined the way to do so is for the people who were wronged to apologize to the people who wronged them.

Brazil is strongly indicating that just beating the fascists at the ballot box is not enough. You have to ensure that the cancer of fascism does not return again. Hungary’s model may be better - put them *all* in jail and rip out their support structures root and branch.

Trump’s superpower has always been that he radiates an anti-gravitas field, such that anything he touches becomes seen as fundamentally unserious. This has allowed Trump to pursue wars, tyranny, and corruption of immense gravity, while everyone tries to avoid looking like they care too much.

Yes! What we’re seeing is the spread of a pervasive social norm where constant lurid expressions of misery and pessimism are de rigueur. People can’t see it because they’re part of it. But it’s obvious when you talk to groups who have every reason to be pessimistic, and they don’t have it.

Yes. I think the consensus among US elite pundits and senior politicians that the way to protect liberal democracy is *not* to punish elite figures who violate its rules is wrong. A norm starting at least with the Watergate pardon. The opposite is true. You need to enforce the law and Constitution.
