It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.

Once again screaming: Before modern medicine, the NATURAL way of doing things (giving birth, fighting/preventing diseases, treating wounds, etc) was DYING. A LOT of people died, all the time. Mothers died, babies died; rich or poor, if you got a thing we couldn’t treat yet, ya dead. THAT’s natural.

If you address their stated concerns, they will simply move to a different argument. They do not engage in good faith because they oppose any and all neighborhood change.

The simpler a potential change appears, the more likely that it has not been implemented because it features deceptive complexity that others have tried and failed to resolve. From an interview of an IRS employee who worked on Direct File donmoynihan.substack.com/p/what-the-d...
I think that anyone who comes into government and wants to make change goes through a period of, like, understanding just how difficult it is to accomplish and just how just what the scope and scale of complexity that you’re dealing with…someone should patent a law that states that the easier a project looks in government, the harder it is to do in reality. The justification being: if it looks really easy and common sense, it means that 20 people have already thought about it and tried it before you, and they’ve all failed because it’s still around…They don’t know what skills are necessary to do this work because I don’t think they understand the complexity of the work. And meanwhile are creating an environment where the people who do know how to do that work either are being forced out by being fired or are not interested in sticking around.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.
