Solar and wind now dominate global electricity generation. Worldwide, solar and wind power will each surpass nuclear in 2026. This surge has halted fossil fuel power generation rise, with renewables overtaking coal, supported by battery storage providing system flexibility at scale.

💯 So much this 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 Can I recommend/plug “Between Two Rivers” by @moudhy.bsky.social to really highlight this point — we humans, connecting to humans in our deep past, who in turn were also connecting to humans in their deep past — through storytelling. The machines can *never* do this.

Love this. The exception might be cuneiform…almost everything you read has not felt the light of day for thousands of years. Every ancient letter, receipt, star map, math problem, or fragment of a poem is new again. It adds to our knowledge and remembrance. It absolutely is thrilling 🧡

Every single article covering Israel should start by mentioning that they dubbed yesterday's operations in Lebanon "eternal darkness." You know that so much has already been normalised when this isn't even a cause for outrage. 303 people, at least, were murdered yesterday by Israel.

What happened yesterday in the hours before a holocaust was not normal. An invisible PM. Streeting refusing to utter a single critical word. Never again must a cabinet be allowed to be so wilfully oblivious to what ordinary people are thinking simply on account of the donations they’re taking.

Have emailed my MP, urge you all to do the same. www.writetothem.com?gad_source=1...
I write tonight in weary anticipation of whatever the United States President is going to do to the people of Iran as he continues his illegal war of aggression. While I am disappointed that the Prime Minister has not been more decisive in preventing the US from using their bases in this country to wage war on Iran I do understand the complicated nature of the UK's entanglement within the US war machine, but I would urge you and the government to reconsider whether this alliance remains in the long term interests of this country, at what point do our values no longer align sufficiently for us to work to disentangle ourselves?
Over the last few months the United States has kidnapped the President of Venezuela, attacked unarmed vessels in international waters, threatened to invade Greenland, and has waged a war of aggression against Iran, now the President of the United States is openly calling for genocide against the people of Iran.
I am a lecturer in international law, I can talk to you about the legality of all of this, or rather the illegality, but I shouldn't need to this is simply immoral, it is the action of a rogue state, a pariah state, when Putin make similar comments about Ukraine we rightly reacted with horror, yet the UK government continues to regard the United States as an important ally. It is unconscionable.

[If the king] does not regard his patrons – his days will diminish. [If the king] does not regard the scholar – his land will rebel against him. [If the king] pays mind to the fool – the land will defect." It goes on to address often‑infringed legal rights and economic privileges of citizens.

The first cuneiform text found after George Smith's decipherment of the Epic of Gilgamesh's Flood Tablet in 1872 was a literary text called šarru ana dīni lā iqūl, or 'The King Does Not Regard the Law'. 'The King Does Not Regard the Law' concerns rulers who act out in a state's self-interest:

Oh my word. I made Quote of the Day in Nature a couple of weeks back and had no idea. www.nature.com/articles/d41... Taken from this piece on de-extinction in Aeon: aeon.co/essays/de-ex... Back to my break.
Quote of the day:

"De-extinction will never be purely, or even primarily, the revival of lost species, but the bioengineering of new life forms that we choose to name after lost ways of being"

Historian of science Sadiah Qureshi argues that efforts to 'de-extinct' species, using frozen biological material or living relatives, risks "reducing species to little more than genetic information, rather than appreciating them as living ways of being alive". (Aeon | 19 min read)
