Southern type happily adopted by Masham (where I programme music and comedy at the Town Hall), by Yorkshire, and by @janrreed. Culture, quizzing, market town life, bit of sport, serendipity. He/him.

The best cheese - and it’s not close - I have had in my life was “Cuillin” from a tiny independent called the West Highland Dairy. On the Scottish mainland near the Skye bridge. Never found the place again or seen it advertised. The Brigadoon of cheese.

In further “Nick states the bleedin obvious” news, The Odyssey is a great blockbuster film. Well acted, well directed, and refreshingly well lit even when they are in a cave or the belly of a wooden horse. It flew by, though the last couple of scenes could have lost a couple of minutes each.

Tasty crispy cheesy top of the toastie. Nom. Sad lukewarm raw bottom of the toastie. Yuk.

Nolan's obsessions with the non-linear storytelling gimmick really hurts this film. It jumps around so much, and spends so little time on any one particular moment or scene, that you never really feel like Odysseus is on an epic journey spanning many years. When he makes it home, you never feel like he's been gone for 20 years. The film does not capture the grandeur and scope of the original epic. That's why it feels rushed and too long simultaneously. The movie comes off like a rough draft. Nolan was searching for the actual story but never quite found it.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The Odyssey, the original work by Homer, is told non-linearly.

14. Paul Weller has the unique distinction of having had No.1s across five decades in various incarnations, and it’s literally him, Macca and Lennon who’ve done it over that stretch of time. So essentially The Style Council were his Wings/ Plastic Ono Band.

The movie "The Odyssey" is great. But if this was 1992, we would all be listening to the Bryan Adams power ballad hit "Making My Way to You (love theme from "The Odyssey")

Will it be Wes as a quid pro quo for not standing? Will it be Ed or is he too Stalinist 🥴? Will it be Shabana 🤷🏻‍♂️? No, it’s a guy nobody was talking about at all. Much political journalism makes football transfer speculation seem accurate.

This is a fallacy known as argument to moderation or argumentum ad temperantiam. It assumes that the truth always lies in the middle of two opposing positions. For example if someone says the sky is blue and another says the sky is yellow, it follows that the sky must be green

My favorite way to put this, as someone who studied Classical History in actual college (not just on Twitter): If you told an ancient Roman or Athenian that his culture had "more in common" with a German or Briton than with an Egyptian or Ethiopian, he'd punch you in the throat.
