I understand that different kinds of music have different purposes, but all music, even if only as a secondary function, should motivate me to succeed in my career. Fortunately most music is designed to do this, but every now and then I hear a song that doesn’t and I think wtf is this?

I’ve never really been able to enjoy stand-up comedy and I think part of problem is that it looks like music. But where music can express ideas very abstractly and ambiguously, stand-up just explains them literally using words and in that sense it just kind of feels like lazy music.

Rather than pop songs, what the supermarkets should really be playing over the PA is longform, slowly developing drone and sound collage kind of stuff because shoppers would stay in the supermarket to find out what the sound does next, and during that time they’d buy additional stuff.

Of course there is intense, crushing societal pressure to like music. But if you don’t like music, you can now just have the computer like music for you.

People think that if they listen to a tape, it’ll attract wasps. But the wasps just want the ferric oxide, so what you do is you leave a small dish of that on the other side of the room for them. Easy. That way you can enjoy listening to your tape with having to worry about getting bit by a wasp.

Before signing to a music label, always check if they have access to a printer, as that kind of tech can really accelerate download code paper slip production.

As “krautrock” isn’t the nicest genre name, I think we should just reject periodization and call it “post-punk” even though almost all of it came before punk.

I was in a hardware store (a Leroy Merlín for what it’s worth) and they were playing a possibly AI-generated southern rock anthem whose chorus goes “I’m a rebel man, but I live by a code!” and it was way too on the nose for hardware store music and I found the whole experience deeply unenjoyable.

If you have an idea for music, but don’t have the means to realize it, a good option is to try and fail, as the failure will often be better than the original idea. However, another solution is to use a voiceover in the track to describe what the music would be doing for the parts you can’t make.

At this point though, if someone contends they have never heard of “Jerry The Butcher Man” by Milford Perkins, that may say more about the listener than the MSR song-poem.

Using birdsong field samples in your music is like wearing t-shirt emblazoned with a slogan in a language you don’t understand. Those birds could be chirping something really fucked up and if that music gets played somewhere that other birds can hear it, what are they going to think?

Whenever you think you need to update to the latest version of Ableton Live and buy the newest granular loop pedal, just remember that electronic music pioneers like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luc Ferrari made their most important works on cracked copies of Fruity Loops 3.

Fans at gigs should bang drums and shout chants to motivate the band members to play well throughout the whole show.

When Billy Joel sings “When I wore a younger man’s clothes” in Piano Man, he’s referring to the time he was a youthful-looking rookie cop who went undercover in a high school to investigate gang crime.

It’s important to have an optimistic attitude when you’re an experimental musician. Because sometimes, despite our best efforts, the music experiment doesn’t work. But we can’t sit around feeling bad about that. We have to just say “Oh well, doesn’t matter. The music experiment will work next time!”

You don’t need to use AI if you know how to listen to music. Everything that AI can do, and more, can be accomplished faster, cheaper and more effectively via music listening. If you don’t know how to listen to music correctly, I understand that using AI might seem tempting, but that’s a false path.

There are many songs (Piano Man, Lady in Red, Pump Up The Jam, etc) where the song seems diagetic to itself, that the song takes place in the world that its lyrics describe, which of course isn’t possible and I think this kind of thing, while maybe fun, probably undermines people’s faith in music.

When you manage a band, during the off-season, you can trade your musicians for musicians in other bands to try to improve the chemistry or to get a better balance of instruments or trade seasoned veterans for up-and-coming youngsters to try to rebuild the band into a future powerhouse.

If you like a piece of music, job done. You don’t need to waste time listening to that one any more. Move on to a piece of music that you don’t like and work on that until you start to enjoy it. Once that one’s in the bag, start again on another that you’re not into yet.

I like some books about music, but when music is converted into a story for a movie, it’s such a downgrade it feels kind of insulting.

Imagine how hard it is for people who dislike music. It’s not like theater, where you can basically live your life choosing to disregard the existence of plays. People expect you to listen to music. If you want to watch a nice commercial for a car, nope, can’t enjoy that because here comes music!

I think of Daft Punk as Office Party Music. Of course not all of their music is suitable for office parties (the Human After All album, for example, contains too much bitcrush to be used in an office) but the entire discography is infected (for me) by the office party association.

I always tell people: buy the best music you can afford. If you try to save money by buying cheap music, you’ll only end up spending more on other music later.

A lot of people think circuit-bending is cool. You can make new sounds. It’s experimental. That’s great. But what if you circuit-bent some old test equipment that was then subsequently used to calibrate a nuclear power plant? Think about what would happen. Yeah, that wouldn’t be so “cool”, would it?

I like when bars/cafes/restaurants have a tv on the wall with no sound and no cc and it’s just showing a person talking. There’s nothing to get from it except a slightly moving picture of a person talking so it’s really just a symbolic tv to make me feel comfortable with its pleasant lurid lightshow

A common thread among well-regarded musicians/bands who I personally can’t get into is that they sound competent. They’re achieving their targets in playing or composition. It’s not bad to be competent, but if you are, I think there’s a responsibility to fight against it to become more incompetent.

When you stream music, all the shitty internet companies can track what you’re listening to and use that information against you. But when you listen to tapes, only some tape reserves like STR can gather that data, and we will never use it against you, unless there is a very good reason to.

Live music in a restaurant could be incredible, but in practice it has the same problem as recorded music in restaurants, ie that restaurants only play boring ass music.

I’m in the basement cleaning flood mud with vacuum, mop and brushes with the washing machine (which miraculously survived!!) running while listening to WFMU, and because it’s empty and reverby, I can’t really tell which sounds are coming from where, but it all works together.
