I reanalyzed the CDC data behind the LGB “free fall” headline. It rests on a change in bisexual identification among one grade, in one wave, of one survey. Gay or lesbian identification did not change significantly. Calling it a "free fall" is sensational and just gives bad actors talking points.
Six small line charts showing the percent of U.S. high school students choosing each sexual identity response option by grade (9th to 12th), 2015 to 2025, with 95% confidence intervals. Heterosexual falls from about 85 to 90 percent before 2021 to about 73 percent in 2021 and 2023, then rises to about 78 to 80 percent in 2025. Gay or lesbian stays between about 2 and 5 percent throughout. Bisexual rises to about 12 percent in 2021 in every grade, then among 9th graders falls to about 7 percent in 2025, its 2019 level, while other grades stay near 10 percent. “Some other way,” added in 2021, falls from about 4 percent to about 2.5 percent. “Not sure” stays near 3 to 5 percent. A dotted line marks 2021, when CDC changed the response options.

It's a freshman/101 class, so I did reply and explain why the AI summary IS actually AI use & that search platforms have made this hard to avoid. But that the point of a brainstorm (the part of the assignment they used the summary on) is your own thoughts vs. before even consulting sources.

I know we're on here talking about AI & assignments on the daily, but I had a student reply they hadn't used AI for an in-class activity because they just used a Google search. But what they posted was literally the AI summary. They said they weren't taught this was "using AI" in high school.

If your magic "tool" is going to be this wrong why on earth use it? I don't get it? If its going to get the materials this wrong, why am I FUCKING WASTING MY TIME WITH IT
I recently used AI to dig through thousands of pages of notes and source material I had gathered more than 15 years ago, for a book on the history of the historical professions. While thinking about a new project on the ways historians adopted new technologies into their work in the past, I used it to scan my sources and it surfaced material I had completely forgotten about and accurately pointed out patterns — such as similarities in attitudes and language in sources written decades apart — that I had missed. Conversely, in that same scan of my source materials, I found the AI drew false inferences from historical documents because it failed to grasp irony and thus inverted the actual point of the author. In other cases, it failed to extract the most interesting material from documents because it was unable to “read against the grain” and capture critical hidden meanings. In each instance, I could recognize these problems only because I’ve spent years working with this material. All of this raises important questions about how to help students develop similar knowledge, experience, and disciplinary judgment, even when this new tool seems, to an untrained eye, to make those things unnecessary.
