To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

I'm repeating an experiment the writer Sarah Miller performed seven years ago. In 2019, she posed as a prospective homebuyer and toured several properties in Miami Beach's most climate-threatened areas, asking realtors whether each place might one day flood, or worse, be swallowed by the rising sea.
The resulting story, published by Popula, is one of my all-time favorite pieces of climate writing.
Titled "Heaven or High Water," it shines absurd light on what it's like to be an average buyer considering investing in deeply precarious real estate. As Miller toured high-risk properties, realtors confidently assured her that pumps and raised roads had "fixed" the flooding; that Miami's millionaires and billionaires wouldn't allow large-scale climate damage to occur; and that in spite of all scientific projections,
"nothing is going to happen."
Afterwards, Miller checked those assurances with actual scientists. You can imagine what they had to say.

America Without the NFL

Chuck Klosterman begins “Football,” his personal history of the game, by admitting that his ideal reader has not yet been born. "My target market is the unborn," he tells us, "closely followed by the recently born, closely followed by a handful of present-day adults who likely have no interest in, what I'm writing about."

Reading Klosterman's thoughts on football felt broadly familiar, but his theory of football is clouded by abstractions and contradictions.

And it's not because he contends that the violence of the sport is not something that people enjoy, even though the NFL used to make compilations of the game's biggest hits every week; it's because he presents so many aspects of football as the idea of football, and not the reality that anyone who is a fan experiences every week. It's a vision of the sport that dwells in Plato's cave.

One of the clumsiest parts of Klosterman's book is his attempts at political punditry. His first provocation is arguing that "all thirty-two NFL teams share their TV revenue equally, the most visibly successful example of American socialism." What he refers to as "socialism" is the billionaire owners' profiting from a closed system, and private companies that often force cities to pay for their stadiums and renovations while the owners keep the profits. And that's without going into the power imbalance between the owners and the labor class of the NFL. Klosterman's idea of socialism and its ethic of redistribution just doesn't make sense, unless it's simply the class solidarity of billionaires.

So the message of this research out of China, where you were seeing a lot of kids using A.I. to help them, was that when they were using the A.I., they were getting things done faster. But it turned out that the skills they were learning were not holding, that their actual personal performance, at least in the way we traditionally measure it, was degrading.

They think of large systems. Today’s computers have trillions, hundreds of trillions of transistors in them. When I first graduated from school, the first chip I worked on had 200 transistors. I knew every one of them by name. No engineer does that today. Most engineers now work well above the transistor, well above the functionality, and they’re cobbling things together to do things.

So you need to think much more about systems and interactions of systems. So some of the lower-level knowledge is gone.
