Why are trans & non-binary names so important? What do they have to do with collective trans power? They are a site for trans self-determination - where we define ourselves for ourselves, outside of legal recognition, medical diagnoses, & cisnormative family traditions. youtube.com/shorts/zqYqp...

On trans names - do you feel your parents have the right to rename you? Or, that you should at least concede to a new name they are willing and able to use for you? IMHO, this undermines trans self-determination. Their involvement is a gift, not a right! youtube.com/shorts/2AZHz... #transnames

I'm curious if anyone has resources, stories, or even anecdotes on the process of choosing new names for trans people who live with DID. In my limited knowledge, I'm aware that alters may not all have the same gender identity (not even trans), and relationships to names vary across them. Advice?

Our community is carrying a lot right now. 💗We’ve gathered peer-support lines, coping tools, affirming providers, mutual aid + other community-based resources so you know where you can turn for support: translifeline.org/resource-kit You deserve support before, during + after a crisis.

Heading: “Need someone to talk to?” Text reads, “These peer-support spaces may be available when you need someone to listen:” Resources listed are Warmline Portal — peer-run listening lines; Call BlackLine — support centering BIPOC; Thrive Lifeline — trans-led, text-based crisis support; and LGBT National Coming Out Hotline. A banner reads, “+ more at translifeline.org/resource-kit.” Small text notes: “Policies around emergency intervention vary. Heading: “Crisis support isn’t the only kind of support.” Text says Trans Lifeline’s resources at translifeline.org/resource-kit include places to find affirming therapists, lower-cost therapy, abolition-centered care, mutual aid and community resources, community-based alternatives to police, and additional trans-affirming providers. Closing text reads, “You deserve support before, during, and after a crisis.”Trans Lifeline resource graphic on a pink background. Heading: “Need to get through right now?” Four coping tools are listed. “Ground: Notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell + 1 you can taste.” “Breathe: Use box breathing to slow down: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold for 4.” “Connect: Text or call someone you trust. You don’t have to know exactly what to say.” “Care for your body: Drink some water. Eat something, if you can. Do a body scan. Change your surroundings. Rest.” Bottom text directs readers to more coping tools at translifeline.org/resource-kit.Trans Lifeline resource graphic on a light blue background. Heading: “Someone you love is in crisis. Don’t Call It A Breakdown: Reclaiming My Life After Suicide
Recently, a former colleague from University of Richmond dined at the vegan restaurant I've been working at for the past 18 months. I didn't immediately recognize them, but as I felt them stare at me from the booth they'd chosen to sit in, it slowly clicked within my brain who they might be. I snuck a quick internet search on my phone to confirm my hunch, but they noticed and seemed to perk up with eager excitement.

Supporting a trans friend in crisis can start with something simple: listen to them. You don’t have to fix everything. You can stay present, ask what they need, affirm them, and respect their autonomy. Here are some ways to support someone without automatically calling 988 or 911. 💜
Trans Lifeline graphic on an orange background with colorful turquoise, purple, and magenta abstract shapes. Text reads: “How to: Supporting your trans friend in crisis. What you can do instead of calling 988 or 911.” An illustration of a hand holding a phone appears at the bottom right.Text reads: “Listen to them. Practice active, reflective listening without trying to ‘fix’ anything. Your friend told you for a reason. They trust you to be there, so listen deeply and hear what they say.”Text reads: “It’s OK to be alarmed, but don’t panic. Often, all we need is for someone to listen while we talk through suicidality the same way they’d listen to any other serious topic. Sometimes your friend might have coping mechanisms that feel scary to you, like substance use or self-injury. Supporting each other without judgment is key.”Text reads: “Understand their circumstances. Ask your friend relevant, open-ended questions: What is taking up most of your headspace right now? What’s something we can do together this week? How can I best support you right now? What’s something that you can do today that would feel good for you?”

The "am I trans enough?" impostor syndrome is back. What authority do I -- a non-binary-identified person who otherwise is read and privileged as a cis man -- have to launch a platform aimed at uplifting trans self-determination? A parallel dilemma is doing racial justice and Black feminist work as a "florescent beige" mixed-Black person often mistaken for (and probably privileged) as a white man.

Recently, a co-worker recently made reference to "grippy socks" in the midst of a conversation about mental illness -- a common topic over which workers in the restaurant industry trauma bond. August 13, 2024 Look at Me! I left barely a scratch on the inside of my left forearm. Just testing out my capacity to endure the pain and willingness to cut deeper. “Cutting Your Parents Off Isn’t the Answer” – What Was the Fucking Question?
Refusing To Be Silent I keep returning to the topic of going no-contact with my family despite feeling self-conscious about publishing my pain for public consumption. I can't shake one troll's complaint about how frequently I criticized my parents for not accepting me on an online platform disguised as a job market discussion board for sociologists. Estrangement was still years off, as was my consciousness-raising around being a survivor of child abuse.

My name-choosing journey didn’t involve burying a deadname, but rather a reconciliation with my birth name even as I chose a new, gender-affirming one.  Coming to Terms with My Name I have always been the quiet type, never wanting to stand out except having to because no one else can do the thing.
