I know there is a hell of a lot going on right now. But not all of it is bad. Some is astonishingly good - like the results of this study from June. Cervical cancer is a terribly cruel thing. This might, at long last, be the beginning of the end of it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I watched the video of these elderly Reform supporters violently assaulting a young woman and it’s incredibly disturbing. I wish I hadn’t, though now I have the measure of how out of control and dangerous these people are. Arrests should follow. Meanwhile this thread makes very good points.

"Counter terror won’t let him on stage yet” a senior Reform figure says, explaining the delay in Nigel Farage’s speech at the Reform UK conference.20:08 4 September

Jack Fenwick
Political correspondent

West Midlands Police say the decision to delay Nigel Farage's conference speech "was made by Reform UK".

A senior Reform figure earlier told the BBC that Farage's speech was delayed because "counter terror won't let him on stage yet".

But West Midlands Police say: "We can confirm that Counter Terrorism Policing have had no involvement in the delivery of the Reform UK Party Conference 2026."

What we need is the opportunity for students to study for qualifications in functional English and maths, that feed into daily life and the world of work. It's not 'dumbing down' to widen opportunities for students to achieve qualifications that will help them move forward #BBCR4Today

What you're saying when you say "DEI" when universities say "EDI" (as happens here) and vice versa. And why it actually matters. The great majority of UK (esp. British) universities use "EDI" while US universities use "DEI". Is that "just" semantic, or does it matter? A thread. 🧵1/8

And you need to know that, while interesting to observe, the changes to US equalities legislation (which are major) have not yet changed any aspect of the law (either of the 2 of them) in the UK. So, when you conflate "DEI" and "EDI", ask yourself whose political work you're doing, and why. 8/8

If greater access to technical education keeps young people engaged in school - reduces their absences, suspensions and permanent exclusions - then this is of enormous value to those young people, to schools and to wider society. The good news is that's exactly what DfE research found
Screen Grab from Department for Education Research.

Title: Technical awards: absence and exclusions outcomes

For pupils in state-funded mainstream schools, taking a Technical Award is associated with pupils having lower absence rates, lower permanent exclusion rates and lower fixed exclusion rates, when compared to similar pupils who did not take a Technical Award.

Anytime someone progressive suggested on twitter that making learning engaging might help, the reaction was 'soft bigotry of low expectations'. But you can't have it both ways. If something isn't working for a significant chunk of learners, especially lower attainers, it's incumbent on us to change.
