Oh I have stories… when I lived in California a LOT of tech men made some wildly inappropriate suggestions to me, a lot of them later panicked when they realised I was over 40. Oh and once you say no, or protect other women? They make sure you don’t get work and are labelled “difficult”.

I wonder how long before phone ban and screen free folks realise that their work has been used to usher in a new era of ableism and harm to those who need tech for accessibility? I wonder if that will be something openly addressed? Just like I wonder if they have the appetite to challenge edtech?

You won’t ever convince me that Turnitin isn’t a mass IP theft machine. And Gen ai marking is just a cheap way of stealing more ideas, feeding each student’s style into the blender and then we wonder why 💯 authentic work gets marked Gen ai.

England is a ridiculous place because we won’t let children have phones in school but they can use chat gpt to do homework or be taught by some AI chatbot. And every school has an AI committee led by someone pro AI.

I was told by some tech men yesterday that it is too hard to change the humanising language around AI. “It hacked” etc And I asked them how the phish smish vish or master/slave stuff or blacklist etc is working out for them? Clearly nothing has been learned Language evolves, tech people do not.

This is important. This week, again, a group who I had found refreshing and restorative and anti AI, have been taken over by pro-AI hype. Because men with a pro AI agenda can make it seem exciting and fun. It made me sad for a while, but I will just find other spaces, other people.

The things I saw working in tech.. I was asked for threesomes at interviews, followed around conferences, a few of us shared info to protect each other. Then some women pretended to be survivors to get info for their male friends or partners and these men blocked us from jobs and opportunities.

We have long needed better tech journalism and I mean even from the faves like 404 etc who only just started talking to qualified women. For too long tech journalism has reinforced tech narratives such as “it isn’t the product it is you”. Or the deificafion of tech CEO. Now we have this.

I think I have discovered why the U.K. teacher culture is so obsessed with social media and podcasts etc: new teachers are being asked to crest podcasts and other online things for their course. Personally I do not see the point and I think this is risking IP too, but what do I know

I think teacher/parent use of social media has ruined online safety for young people. When your trusted adults film themselves, use their real name and put their lives - and yours- online for likes….you end up posting your address/uni course/drunken antics online.

I’m happy to see an edtech push back in the U.K. , but sadly as often happens, it leans very ableist and classist. You can bring back books and writing. But you also need family support. Too many “screen free”UK stuff is led by wealth with staff, support and means. And tech can be inclusion

Young people today have to watch the adults act the fool on social media, share AI generated misinformation and deepfakes on Facebook, AI art is everywhere, their school work is set and marked by AI. They can’t get jobs due to AI hiring systems…while being told they are the ones using AI too much.

My eldest went to her first university intro lecture and it was all about how they want to remove AI from the faculty and the university. Someone even screamed “F AI” at the back. So there is hope! And young people seem resoundingly sick of AI in their education

My theory is that cybersecurity awareness isn’t working anymore because you can’t keep blaming people for your own security failings. But luckily, AI came along and now all the mediocre security people can blame “agentic AI” for going “rogue” and causing security incidents. Not themselves

I know online safety has failed because we have teachers filming in classrooms under their real names, parents filming children at their homes, social media is full of parents posting school or university drop offs, and students posting their halls and addresses for likes.

The sad answer to this is that a lot of people in power are very comfortable with harm. They do not care at all about csam or racist abuse or disinformation. And they are obsessed with likes, follower count and having their ego boosted by panels and talks. That’s all it is. Cruelty is the point

I’m so tired of people saying that AI can be useful. So was asbestos. And lead. I don’t expect to halt the use of AI but I do wish we could just say “there are harms and we don’t know enough to call it safe or exciting”. And we definitely shouldn’t let it be used in schools.
