We created gyms because modern day work no
longer required physical activity. Without exercise,
our muscles atrophy.
I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al

Did you know you only need a small brain to make silly little drawings?
4 panel comic:
Panel 1: pink blob guy on a table, pencil in their hands. Grey circle on a piece of paper and a glass of water on the table. They say “look here”
Panel 2: Proudly, they hold up the drawing of a grey blobby character on two stick legs up in the air. The pink blob says “I drew this!”
Panel 3: Satisfied they sit back down on the table. They now go “it’s not much, but..” The grey drawing looks a bit peeved because the drawer is calling it “not much”
Panel 4: But it’s okay, because now the pink blob is very pleased finally. He says “it came from my brain!” Holding the pencil up. The grey drawing blob is happy again, too. End well, all well!

I don't think it's any secret that women and children are going to suffer way more negative effects from AI than men are, not least from the abusive imagery, which is already completely rife. What are we even doing when this fact gets so routinely ignored by politicians and the media?

And appallingly, schools are still uploading images of children to their websites and social media channels. Because nothing matters more to schools than clicks and likes and “engagement”. But we banned phones in schools, so we care about children. Or maybe we care about children recording harm..

Young people read the news and watch the world around them, if you want them to pursue STEM careers, or any career, make sure you have a sector that they can see themselves safely working in. That’s not tech or stem for sure.

It's Banned Books Week. My fellow librarians, listen carefully: your book displays should be almost exclusively writers who are alive. Yes, I know classic literature is also being banned, but most of those authors are dead. They aren't suffering financially from bans and challenges.

Although thinking about things helps you remember them, you're not thinking about things in order to remember them. It's about being able to use them, for communication but also just because there's joy in learning about everything. Memory is a byproduct. Using what you remember is the purpose.

I have no time for Badenoch or the Tories but there is a 'cliff edge' cut off point for funding at 100k which means well off parents are better off refusing a payrise than going over that amount. Worth remembering that childcare policies *always* affect women the most so it's also an equity issue.

Good. But ofsted needs external voices to prompt and manage these changes. The organisation has shown that it does not have the vision or creativity to see inspection in any other way. This needs to be serious reform, not more tinkering around the edges. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Just after his release from the asylum, and a few weeks before he died, van Gogh painted this vibrant scene of flowering chestnut trees in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise. Not seen in public for many decades, it’s hoped to fetch $180m at auction (Châtaigniers en Fleurs, May 1890)
Sunny day, but with very dark blue sky. Large tree, with many yellow/orange flowers, by the side of a dirt road where a man is walking. Three women in colourful dresses walk with parasols on footpath in shade of tree

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Just seen someone posting (elsewhere) about 'developing teacher agency' while making their teachers use a set of specific steps in class based on a very narrow view of learning. The term 'checking for understanding' has become a proxy for compliance imho.

The Times - which has v much joined in the rightwing clamour to reduce immigration - now reporting that Mahmood’s “success” has cost the economy £4- to £7Bn. Would they like to now honestly confirm that fewer people = less spending power for all. There’s a high price to pay for this nasty obsession.
Patrick Maguire
Chief Political Commentator Oliver Wright Policy Editor

Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.
Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).
The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana
Mahmood's
reforms, which have cut net migration to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

Because of the multitude of pressures on schools atm, especially around accountability measures, I'm not sure they have the capacity, funding or ratios to flex in the way that is needed when you have children with very high level needs in a setting. I don't think 'more training' is a solution.

The thing we have found in our setting about inclusion is that you have to be willing and have the capacity to adapt environment, resources, curriculum, staffing and timings rather than just using more strategies. Scaffolding isn't just what teachers do, it's the environment itself.

An oil painting of three squash - on the left is a round orange one (uchi kuri), on the right is a squat round beige one, and behind is a yellow long and curved one (possibly a franchi courgette).
